HIGHEST COMMON FACTOR (H.C.F.) –LONG DIVISION METHOD
To find the H.C.F. of two numbers using long division method:
STEPS:
• Divide the bigger number by the smaller number. Obtain a remainder.
• Now divide the divisor of step 1 by the remainder obtained.
• Repeat this process until the remainder obtained is zero.
• The divisor of the last step is the H.C.F.
e.g.: Find H.C.F. of 18 and 21 using Long Division Method.

Step 1: Shade 1 as it is neither prime nor composite.
Step 2: Shade all the multiples of 2 (except 2) with red colour.
Step 3: Shade all the multiples of 3 (except 3) out of the numbers that are left, with
green colour.
Step 4: Shade all the multiples of 5 (except 5) out of the numbers that are left, with
blue colour.
Step 5: Shade all the multiples of 7 (except 7) out of the numbers that are left, with
pink colour.
The numbers that are left unshaded are the prime numbers between 1 and 100.
The Prime numbers between 1 and 100: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41,
43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89 and 97.
