I. Background of the study
Education, it is an important agency that can develop a person’s skill, critical
thinking, knowledge, and secures a good and stable life in the future. Moreover,
education serves as a guide for every youth to become more adoptable in the society,
and be able to adjust easily on how the society functions.
In order to gain an academic achievements, students have to work hard and
improve their academic performances. However, stress is one of the factors that affects
a student’s academic performance. According to the World Health Organization (2021),
any kind of change that puts physical, mental, or psychological strain on a person is
considered to be stressful. Stress can greatly impact a person’s mentality, body,
thoughts and feelings, and behaviour.
Although some degree of stress is vital to inspire and motivate individuals to
achieve their goals, stress can be a barrier for focusing, problem solving, decision
making and other essential capacities for student’s learning. A high level of stress
reduces student’s ability to concentrate on their studies. Consequently, it makes it
difficult for them to memorize facts for tests. Even more, poor concentration could limit
student’s ability to think critically or at optimal levels when they write their papers or
during tests (Stupart Y. Ph. D., 2022).
Stress is usually caused by excessive amount of homework, social life, perceived
parental pressure, university applications, and never-ending workloads. In addition,
according to the statistics of Watson E., et al. (2022) that 70% of students reported that
depression and anxiety are a “major problem” in the school community. Furthermore, in
the research of Sian Beilock, Ph. D., if stress is not managed properly, it can prevent
students from successfully achieving their academic goals.
In relation, Ann Pietrangelo stated in 2020 that stress will not only affect student’s
academic performances, but also physical and mental health. Chronic stress can result
in a number of symptoms and have an impact on your general health. Chronic stress
can cause headaches, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and irritability.
In this study, it generally focuses on the negative effect of stress to students in
relation to academic performances at school. Students frequently engage in groups or
individual interactions with their environment, and these interactions have an impact on
their academic performance in one way or another. Stress have been considered as a
common issue to students, especially during the occurrence of the 2019 pandemic.
Wherein students tried to adjust, learn, and participate to a new education system. Even
before the 2019 pandemic, stress is very common towards students, and it has been a
great concern to members of the academic world and other researchers towards this
issue.
By this study, it will further increase the validity of other related academic
research, that stress can affect student’s academic performances. In addition, it will
provide an overview of how stress can greatly affect a student’s academic
performances, and provide recommendations on how to control and avoid stress. Thus,
this study aims to examine the effects of stress on the academic performances of
students in Mambusao National High School.
