Introduction
This course is one of the fundamental courses in Industrial Engineering.
Its focus is on the evaluation of work methods through studying time and
motions needed to accomplish work. The course deals with the design and
measurement of work, which are fundamental to the modern industrial
organization. Knowledge and skill in work study and measurement will
provide the basic principles and application of motion and time study that can be
used to increase productivity, improve equipment utilization, conserve
materials and energy, reduce human effort, and advancing goals of an
organization. It deals with process charting analysis, work sampling, computer
work measurement, predetermined time systems (PTMS) particularly motion
time measurement (MTM), work factor and standard data. Aside from the tools

Work Study Definition
⦿ Work Study is an area of knowledge that addresses the problem of work
simplification with the basis objectives of productivity enhancement, human
comfort and safety.

⦿ Work study is defined as that body of knowledge concerned with the analysis
of the work methods and the equipment used in performing a job, the design of
an optimum work method and the standardization of proposed work methods.

engineering techniques, used to investigate:

Methods of performing work (Method Study).

Methods Study
⦿ Method study is a technique to reduce the work content mainly by
eliminating unnecessary movements by workers, materials, or
equipment.

⦿ However, even after that, there could be substantial unnecessary

time taken for the process because of lack of management control or
inaction of worker.

⦿ Method Study approaches and tools of Method Analyst:

Flow Diagrams & Process Charts etc.
Critical questioning techniques.

Methods Study
⦿ Method study is the systematic recording and critical examination
of existing and proposed ways of doing work, as a means of
developing and applying easier and more effective methods and
reducing costs.

⦿ Used to analyze
▪ Movement of body, people, or material
▪ Activities of people & machines

Work Measurement
⦿ Work Measurement Study is a general term used to describe the
systematic application of industrial engineering techniques to establish
the work content and time it should take to complete a task or series of
tasks.
⦿ Work measurement is a productivity improvement tool. Before
improvements can be made, the current productivity level of an
organization must be measured. This measurement is then used as a
baseline to determine if improvement projects have resulted in
genuine improvement.

Work Measurement
⦿ Work measurement helps to uncover non-value added areas of
waste, inconsistency, and non-standardization that exist in the
workplace. Work measurement studies uncover ways to make work
easier, and to produce products or services more quickly and
economically.
⦿ Work measurement involves the estimation of the amount of
human effort needed for producing a unit of specified output from an
operation. The amount of time that is usually taken by a well trained
worker, operating under normal working conditions, to produce one
unit of output is referred to as work standard.

Scientific management, established by Frederick Taylor, advanced industrial practices by introducing systematic approaches to optimizing work processes and improving efficiency. It emphasized the use of time and motion studies, standardization, and economic interrelationships to enhance productivity. Taylor's methods challenged traditional practices and paved the way for modern industrial management techniques by creating clear-cut standards and work methods focused on maximized output and worker productivity .

Work measurement studies help organizations identify constraints by analyzing productivity levels and uncovering inconsistencies and inefficiencies in processes. These studies involve estimating the effort required for tasks, establishing work standards, and assessing performance. By identifying non-value-added activities and standardizing tasks, organizations can optimize resources, balance workloads, and improve overall performance .

The historical development of time study techniques by pioneers like Frederick Taylor and Frank & Lillian Gilbreth has deeply influenced modern industrial engineering practices by introducing systematic analysis and control of work processes. These techniques laid the groundwork for developing efficient work methods, standardizing operations, and improving productivity. The focus on time, efficiency, and movement streamlined production processes and significantly contributed to the present-day pursuit of lean manufacturing and operational excellence .

Work study and measurement enhance productivity and operational efficiency by analyzing and developing better work methods, reducing unnecessary movements, and standardizing work processes. They also identify non-value-added activities and optimize human and machine resources, which leads to reduced manufacturing costs and better manpower planning. Additionally, work study helps ensure fair wages and improves workplace conditions, contributing to overall employee satisfaction and morale .

Frederick Taylor is considered the father of scientific management and industrial engineering, having started to analyze, measure, and control work in the late 1880s. He developed principles of scientific management and laid the foundation for modern industrial engineering. Henry Laurence Gantt, who worked under Taylor, made significant contributions with his focus on the human aspect of management and his development of the Gantt chart, a project management tool for scheduling tasks .

Integrating work study and measurement with wage payment and incentive plans benefits organizations by aligning employee compensation with performance and output. Establishing clear work standards and productivity goals ensures fair compensation, boosts morale, and encourages efficiency. It fosters better industrial relations and motivates employees to achieve or exceed targets, which enhances productivity and operational efficiency while reducing grievances over workload and assignments .

The Gantt chart, introduced by Henry Laurence Gantt, significantly influenced project management by providing a visual tool to schedule tasks and track progress on projects. It allowed managers to easily monitor timelines and ensure that projects were completed efficiently, thus optimizing the management of time and resources .

A method study systematically records and critically examines existing and proposed ways of performing work to develop more efficient methods. Essential components include flow diagrams, process charts, and critical questioning techniques. By analyzing body, material, and machine movements, method studies reduce labor costs by eliminating unnecessary movements and improving material handling, thus optimizing work flow and productivity .

'Therbligs' are a set of fundamental motions used in the study of work processes, created by Frank & Lillian Gilbreth to improve motion economy. These 18 elements of motion describe various movements performed during work tasks, enabling detailed analysis and optimization of physical labor. They contributed greatly to the field of industrial engineering by providing a framework to minimize wasted effort and increase efficiency in manual labor .

The principles of work study that must be implemented at top management levels include the awareness of objectives and the need for such studies, and that method study should precede work measurement. These principles ensure the alignment of organizational goals with work processes, aiming for operational efficiency and productivity improvement .
