Critical thinking is both an intellectual and social skill of enormous importance in
personal growth. The importance of thinking critically stems from the ability to develop
strategies in an efficient and coordinated manner, both intellectually and emotionally.
On the other hand, reasoning, in its various forms, is an intellectual and logical process
that allows the development of arguments that, when connected, can reach a conclusion.
The difference between the two is perceptible when it is recognized that the formation
of arguments differs greatly in people and that they can be influenced by the level of
experience, knowledge and other personal factors. However, the critical order of
everything that is called information can disarm arguments that have been validated by
reasoning and effectively discern. For this reason, the critical thinker does not seek to be
right, but to find the reasons why something is wrong and, therefore, must be corrected.
So I consider that critical thinking is more important than reasoning, since it allows us
to avoid the cognitive biases that can exist in most messages. Likewise, thinking
critically is the potential connection of experience and knowledge to keep an open mind
and thus seek the truth, solve problems and interact effectively in the social
environment.
Thinking critically is an important skill to develop, and you don't have to be mentally
lazy to do so. You always have to ask yourself the why of things. One of these is “Why
do you believe what you believe?”. Personally, I believe what I believe because I have a
foundation from my upbringing that has allowed me to acquire a set of values and
beliefs, in addition to others that I have acquired at various stages of my life as an adult.
So I think of parenting as the fundamental axis of what we believe to what we will add
later as the evidence that justifies our way of thinking and reasoning in every aspect of
life. For example, believing that "giving is better than receiving" is a foundation of
humility as a value that was instilled in me since I was a child, which allows me to
strengthen my vocation for service in healthcare. Likewise, I also believe that there is a
relationship between health and well-being along with order and cleanliness. This belief
leads me to cleanliness as a value that I also received as a value since I was a child and
that has somehow influenced my professional performance, because I believe that where
there is cleanliness there are greater possibilities of having health and well-being. And
the other answer that explains why is simply that in my family there is a lot of health, it
is strange that one of my brothers is sick beyond a simple flu; so I consider these values
of enormous importance that must be transmitted to other family members and of
course, to patients.
In conclusion, thinking critically professionally will provide the best experience and
probity of the knowledge acquired. And although this does not imply that reasoning
should be left aside, we must critically validate the information we perceive.
