Zoology Lab: Frog Circulatory System

This document contains an answer sheet for identifying structures of the circulatory system of a frog. It lists the labeled structures of the venous system, arterial system, and heart of a frog. The venous system section lists 21 labeled veins. The arterial system section lists 25 labeled arteries. The heart section lists 6 structures of the frog heart, including the right atrium, left atrium, ventricle, coronary artery, and sinus venosus. The document also contains two questions about differences in size of the auricles and the function of valves in the circulatory system.

II. Questions to answer:

1. How can you explain the differences in size of the auricles?
 The left auricle, also known as the left atrial appendage (LAA), is actually a small,
muscular pouch at the upper corner of the left atrium. The right auricle of the heart - also
called the right atrial appendage (RAA) - is attached to the heart's right atrium. It's a
small, cone-shaped pouch which comes out from the upper and front part of the atrium
and overlaps the root of the aorta. The RAA is very muscular, and is lined with small
muscles on its surface.
2. What is the function of the valves? Of the chordae tendinae?
 The valves keep the blood moving forward in the circulatory system. The blood moves in
starts and stops, with each heartbeat.
 The chordae tendineae is to prevent the valves from opening in the wrong direction and
plays a vital role in holding the atrioventricular valves in place while the heart is pumping
blood. They rare commonly referred as “heart strings”.
3. In a three-chambered heart, will there be any mixture of venous and arterial blood in the
ventricle? Support your answer.

4. Explain how the spiral valve operates in conducting oxygenated and the deoxygenated blood
form the ventricle to the proper arteries?
 Valves are arranged in spiral form which can cause divisions in internal aorta.
Oxygenated blood from left side of the ventricle is directed into the ventral division of
the ventral aorta and passes to the anterior of the arterial arches. On the other hand,
oxygenated blood in the right side of the ventricle is directed into the two most posterior
arterial arches and passes mainly to the lungs.
5. Why are capillaries considered the functional parts of the circulatory system?
 The capillaries are one of the most important parts of the circulatory system because it's
through them that nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the cells. In addition, waste
products such as carbon dioxide are also removed by the capillaries, join arteries to
venues, extremely narrow and only single layer of endothelium form vast networks.
6. Trace the course of the blood from the capillaries of the intestines to the capillaries of the
hindlimbs.
