Saving Paradise: Environmental Reflection

The document summarizes an episode of the Atom Araullo Special television program that aired on GMA Public Affairs in March 2019. The episode, titled "Saving Paradise", discusses several environmental issues facing the Philippines, including water pollution from human and industrial waste that affects both public health and fish populations. It also covers the government's Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project and efforts to rehabilitate Boracay Island. While the government and non-profits are working to address pollution and provide clean water, some individuals continue harmful practices and more partnership is still needed between all groups to fully tackle the problems.

REFLECTION PAPER
The Atom Araullo Special Entitled Saving Paradise, which aired on March 31, 2019 by
GMA Public Affairs, tackles the environmental issues that our country faces as one of the
countries where tourism is one of the major economic hotspots and a source of income. But
pollution affects not only the lives of people but also the environment. The water quality affects
the fish growth in the area, and despite the dangers of its waters, people still use it as a
swimming area. It also talks about Duterte’s administration's Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project,
a part of Manila Bay will be turned into a Dolomite Beach to help rehabilitate the once-thriving
Manila Bay. Araullo talks about how some people reside in Baseco Compound and they try to
catch fish in the area, but sadly, only a small number of fish were caught, and it dangerous
because of the coliform levels that come from many possible causes, like E. coli. bacteria that
come from people’s feces.

Araullo also mentioned that some river channels and creeks that connect to Manila Bay
are polluted and dangerous to live in. One of the latest developments in environmental
sustainability is the rehabilitation of Boracay Beach. Former President Rodrigo Duterte once
said that Boracay Beach is a "cesspool beach," and closed for one year for rehabilitation. Now,
Boracay Beach enforces the law and “25 plus 5 rule," which states that no establishments may
be within 25–30 meters of the shoreline of the beach to maintain its natural wonders, and
establishments that are not abiding by these laws may be closed and fined. to help people have
safe water to drink. Non-government organizations established water treatment facilities that
offer water faucets, and the government also find ways to have proper water treatment facilities
to help people with a safe water supply.

I found that despite government efforts to help the environment, some people still don’t
mind the effects of polluting the water, which are alarming. The fact that some groups are
making ways on how to help the environment, are not totally helping reduce the pollution and
need the partnership between the government-environmental groups and the people also to
help these problems. Where there is no real care, there is no meaning. In conclusion, I would
strongly recommend Atom Araullo Specials to persons who care about the environment, and
who want to truly help the environment for having a safe, clean environment and be seen by
future generations.
