The article Understanding Discourse Communities is an article written by Dan Melzer
about discourse communities and how they are important for writing. He starts off with a
story of how he tries to start playing guitar in order to make it easier to understand what
a discourse community is. He says when he starts learning how to play guitar that he
has a lot of struggles and he wishes that he could have help with other people who play
guitar. Eventually he would find a group that would meet up and help him learn how to
play guitar and play songs with him. All this is to show what a discourse group is which
is a group of people with similar goals, communication between members, and some
expert members as well as some beginner members. All these things to describe a
discourse group are found in the classes we take in college with the course being the
genre of the discourse group and the students being the beginners with the teacher
being the expert. This goes to show why discourse groups are so important because
when you start a class you are a beginner and will likely struggle in class but as you
receive help from the teacher as well as other classmates you will be able to learn and
become more knowledgeable on the subject. The main idea of the article is to just go
into detail on discourse communities and explain different kinds of discourse
communities and how they are impactful for everyone involved.
How would you be able to grow as a writer in a discourse community that is not very
involved or helpful?
How are discourse communities beneficial to the experts who don't have much to learn?
