Tutorial 3

The document presents a tutorial on state space representation for two SISO systems, detailing their equations and the process to determine the transfer function of a cascaded system. It also includes a first-order matrix differential equation, asking for the transfer function and the solution for a unit step input. Additionally, it discusses a linear time-invariant SISO system and requests the damping ratio, along with a block diagram representation of a given state space model.

Tutorial 3: State Space Representation

1. Consider the state space model of two SISO systems as follows:

System 1:
𝑥̇ 0 1 𝑥1 0
[ 1] = [ ] [𝑥 ] + [ ] 𝑢1 (𝑡)
𝑥̇ 2 −2 −3 2 2
𝑥1
𝑦1 = [1 2] [𝑥 ]
2
System 2:
𝑥̇ −3 1 𝑥3 0
[ 3] = [ ] [𝑥 ] + [ ] 𝑢2 (𝑡)
𝑥̇ 4 0 −3 4 1
𝑥3
𝑦2 = [1 1] [𝑥 ]
4

The two systems are connected in cascade by making 𝑢2 (𝑡) = 𝑦1 (𝑡).

Determine the transfer function of the combined cascaded system.

2. A first order matrix differential equation of a system is given as

𝑥̇ 0 1 𝑥1 0
[ 1] = [ ] [𝑥 ] + [ ] 𝑢
𝑥̇ 2 −2 −3 2 2
𝑥1
𝑦 = [1 1] [𝑥 ]
2
(a) Find the transfer function of the system.
(b) Find the solution of the states and the output when the input is a unit step
and the initial condition of the states is [0 1]𝑇 .

3. A linear time-invariant SISO system has a state space model given by

𝑑𝑥
= 𝐹𝑥 + 𝐺𝑢; 𝑦 = 𝐻𝑧
𝑑𝑡
where,
0 1 0
𝐹=[ ]; 𝐺 = [ ]; 𝐻 = [1 0]
−4 −2 1

Here x is the state vector, u is the input and y is the output. Determine the
damping ratio of the system.

4. Draw the block diagram for the state space model given by,

𝑥̇ 1 0 1 0 𝑥1 0
[𝑥̇ 2 ] = [0 0 1 ] [𝑥2 ] + [0] 𝑢 and 𝑦 = 𝑥1
𝑥̇ 3 0 𝑎2 𝑎3 𝑥3 1
