HISTORY;
CATIA started as an in-house development in 1977 by French aircraft
manufacturer MARCEL DASSUAULT at that time customer of
the CADAM software to develop Dassault's Mirage fighter jet. It was
later adopted by the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and other
industries.
Initially named CATI (conception assistée tridimensionnelle
interactive – French for interactive aided three-dimensional
design), it was renamed CATIA in 1981 when Dassault created a
subsidiary to develop and sell the software and signed a non-
exclusive distribution agreement with IBM.
In 1984, the Boeing Company chose CATIA V2 as its main 3D
CAD tool, becoming its largest customer.
In 1988, CATIA V3 was ported from mainframe
computers to Unix.
In 1990, General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp chose CATIA as its
main 3D CAD tool to design the U.S. Navy's Virginia class
submarine Also, Lockheed was selling its CADAM system
worldwide through the channel of IBM since 1978.
In 1992, CADAM was purchased from IBM and the next year
CATIA CADAM V4 was published.
In 1996, it was ported from one to four Unix operating systems,
including IBM AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX Sun
Microsystems SunOS and Hewlett-Packard HP-UX.
In 1998, V5 was released and was an entirely rewritten version of
CATIA with support for UNIX, Windows NT and Windows
XP (since 2001).
In the years prior to 2000, problems caused by incompatibility
between versions of CATIA (Version 4 and Version 5) led to
$6.1B in additional costs due to years of project delays in
production of the Airbus A380
Sasi Institute of Technology & Engineering, Tadepalligudem
Internship Report on Catia v5
In 2008, Dassault Systemes released CATIA V6.While the server
can run on Microsoft Windows Linux or AIX, client support for
any operating system other than Microsoft Windows was dropped.
In November 2010, Dassault Systèmes launched CATIA
V6R2011x, the latest release of its PLM2.0 platform, while
continuing to support and improve its CATIA V5 software.
In June 2011, Dassault Systèmes launched V6 R2012 In 2012,
Dassault Systèmes launched V6 2013x.
In 2014, Dassault Systèmes launched 3DEXPERIENCE Platform
R2014x and CATIA on the Cloud, a cloud version of its software.

Mechanical engineering;
CATIA enables the creation of 3D parts, from 2D sketches, sheet
metal, composites, molded, forged or tooling parts up to the
definition of mechanical assemblies.
The software provides advanced technologies for mechanical
surfacing & BIW.
It provides tools to complete product definition, including
functional tolerances as well as kinematics definition.
CATIA provides a wide range of applications for tooling design,
for both generic tooling and mold & die.
In the case of Aerospace engineering an additional module named
the aerospace sheet metal design offers the user combine the
capabilities of generative sheet metal design and generative surface
design.
Sasi Institute of Technology & Engineering, Tadepalligudem
Internship Report on Catia v5
Design;
CATIA offers a solution to shape design, styling, surfacing
workflow and visualization to create, modify, and validate complex
innovative shapes from industrial design to Class-A surfacing with
the ICEM surfacing technologies.
CATIA supports multiple stages of product design whether started
from scratch or from 2D sketches(blueprints)
FILE COMPATIBILITY AND CATIA V4,V5,V6 VERSIONS;
Dassault Systèmes provides utilities to convert CATIA V4 data
files so they are accessible to CATIA V5 and CATIA V6. Still,
cases show that there can be issues in the data conversion from
CATIA V4 to V5 from either differences in the geometric kernel
between CATIA V4 and CATIA V5 or by the modelling methods
employed by end users.
The percentage loss can be minimized by using the appropriate
pre-conversion clean-up, choosing the appropriate conversion
options, and clean-up activities after conversion
Conversion from CATIA Version 4 to Version 5 created
construction problems for the Airbus A380 aircraft. These
problems resulted in $6.1B of additional costs due to years of
project delays when aircraft wiring was too short to make
connections.
Transition from V5 to V6 is facilitated because they are sharing the
same geometric kernel. Third-party file translators also up-convert
CATIA files between version.

1.1 SKETCHER WORK BENCH;
The sketch is the basic requirement to create the base feature of
any solid model. In CATIA, a sketch is drawn in the Sketcher
workbench.
To invoke the Sketcher workbench, choose the down arrow
available on the right of the Sketcher button in the Sketcher
toolbar; a flyout appears.
Press and hold the left mouse button on the vertical/horizontal line
available at the left/top of the flyout and drag it.
The flyout is now detached from its parent toolbar and becomes an
independent toolbar. Figure 1-6 shows the Sketcher flyout as an
independent toolbar.
The two buttons that are available with the Sketcher toolbar are
Sketcher and Sketch with Absolute Axis definition.
The next section focuses on invoking the Sketcher workbench
using these two buttons.

1.3 SETTING UP THE SKETCHER WORKBENCH;
After invoking the Sketcher workbench, you need to set the
workbench as per the sketching or drawing requirements.
These requirements include modifying units, grid settings, and so
on. The next section focuses on setting these parameters.

Internship Report on Catia v5
Modifying Units To modify units, invoke the Options dialog box
by choosing Tools > Options from the menu bar. Click on the +
sign located on the left of the General option to expand the tree.
Choose the Parameters and Measure option; tabs corresponding to
this selection will appear on the right side of the Options dialog
box. Now, choose the Units tab. The Options dialog box after
invoking the Units
1.4 Modifying the Grid Settings ;
On invoking the Sketcher workbench, you will observe two types
of lines in the geometry area, flowing in the horizontal and vertical
directions. These are continuous and dotted black lines.
The spacing between two dotted lines is called Graduation, while
the spacing between two continuous black lines is called Primary
Spacing. The mesh that is formed because of the intersection of
these lines in vertical and horizontal direction is called Grid.
In other words, Primary Spacing and Graduation define the Grid.
By default, the Graduations is set to 10 in both horizontal and
vertical direction. The default Primary Spacing value is 100mm.
Though you can change the Primary Spacing and Graduation value
in horizontal and vertical direction individually, yet it is
recommended not to change these values.
If the values of Primary Spacing or Graduations in horizontal are
different than those in the vertical direction, then the Grid is said to
be distorted.
To change the values of Primary Spacing and Graduations, choose
Tools > Options from the menu bar; the Options dialog box will be
displayed. Choose the Mechanical Design option from the tree on
the left side of the dialog box.

1.5 Drawing Lines by Specifying Points in the Geometry
Area;
To draw a line by specifying points in the geometry area, invoke
the Line tool by choosing the Line button from the Profile toolbar.
You will observe that as you move the cursor in the geometry area,
the coordinates corresponding to the current location of the cursor
are displayed above it.
After invoking the Line tool, you are prompted to select a point or
click to locate the start point of the line. The prompt sequence is
displayed in the Current Information or Dialog Box area of the
Status bar available below the geometry area.
Click anywhere in the geometry area to specify the start point of
the line. You are then prompted to specify its endpoint. Move the
cursor away from the start point to specify the endpoint of the line.
On moving from the start point, you will notice a rubber band line
is attached to the cursor.

2.2 OPENING A NEW CATPART DOCUMENT;
This task shows you how to open a new CATPart document. Select
the File -> New commands.
The New dialog box is displayed, allowing you to choose the type
of document you need. Select Part in the List of Types field and
click OK. The Part Design workbench is loaded and a CATPart
document opens.
The Part Design workbench document is divided into: a) the
specification tree, b) the geometry area, c) specific toolbars, a
number of contextual commands available in the specification tree
and in the geometry. Remember that these commands can also be
accessed from the menu bar.
You will notice that CATIA provides three planes to let you start
your design. Actually, designing a part from scratch will first
require designing a sketch. Sketching profiles is performed in the
Sketcher workbench, which is fully integrated into Part Design. To
open it, just click the Sketcher.
Icon and select the work plane of your choice. The Sketcher
workbench then provides a large number of tools allowing you to
sketch the profiles you need.

2.4 PAD
The pad icon allows you to use a sketch and extrude it in a linear
direction producing a solid pad.
You can create a sketch or profile on-the-fly by pressing the third
mouse button while in the Selection box.
This would allow you to use one of the available options to define
the profile if you did not have it created already.
When you create a pad, a Pad Definition window appears like the
one shown below.
Initially the window will appear with only the First Limit and then
you have the option to select the More>> option to see the Second

Limit. Since the options are the same for both limits they will be
discussed only once.
Type Dimension Allows you to key in a Length Up to next Goes to
the next side of an existing part Up to last Goes to the last side of
an existing part Up to plane Goes to a specified plane which is its
Limit Up to surface Goes to a specified surface which is its Limit
When you select a Type other than Dimension you will have the
option to specify an Offset value from the corresponding limit.
Fig 2.1
Select Sketch.1. This specifies that you want to use that sketch to
define the profile of your pad. For this pad you are going to use the
basic option of keying in a length. You will also preview what the
Mirrored extent and Reverse Direction options allow you to do.
Change the value in Length to be 4. Do not press Enter or else it
will automatically create the pad with that value. Normally you
would just enter the value and press Enter, however you are going
to want to Preview in order for you see what it is going to do until
you understand the different options.
Sasi Institute of Technology & Engineering, Tadepalligudem
Internship Report on Catia v5
Select Preview. A preview of what the pad will look like appears.
You will now change some of the other options to see the
difference between them.
Select Mirrored extent and select Preview. As you can see, instead
of the pad extending in only the one direction, it now extends both
directions, four inches each. It basically is using your current
sketch as the mirror plane.
Select Mirrored extent again to turn it off and select Preview. Now
you are going to reverse the direction in order for the pad to be
created in the opposite direction.
Select Reverse Direction and select Preview. Notice that the pad is
still going to be four inches wide but it is now going in the opposite
direction. This is the pad you want to create.
2.5 Pocket;
the main purpose of the pocket is remove the material .it is
opposite to the pad

3.1 ASSEMBLY
To make an assembly in CATIA V5 is not a very hard
thing to do; all you should do is to make the right
constraints and to know few frequent used commands in
this CATIA module.
I think you know some things about Assembly module of
CATIA, but I want to be sure that you know what do this
Sasi Institute of Technology & Engineering, Tadepalligudem
Internship Report on Catia v5
module. So, this module is specially created to can make
an assembly with many components (.CATParts) or many
other assemblies (.CATProduct).
Coincidence Constraint – this command create a
coincidence constraint between two components of the
active component;
Contact constrain – creates a contact constraint between
two components of the active component;
Offset Constraint – creates an offset constraint between
two components of the active component;
Angle Constraint – creates an angular, parallelism or
perpendicularity constraint between two components of
the active component.
Fix Component – Fix the component position in the
active component.
My company use CATIA with some restriction when I
speak about constraints in an Assembly module, what
means that? If you use CATIA with any modification after
installation, when you will try to make a Coincidence
constrain CATIA it’s capable to recognize simple features
like (intersection points, points, lines, axis) without any
problem, but I my case, my company block this feature
and I must build all this simple features and after that to
use for assembly
It`s very important to make for each part publication. You
must make public any feature of parts that you consider
necessary to make an assembly. To make public a feature
like a point, axis system or line, you must navigate
on Tools -> Publication and select all features that you
want to make public.
Now will make all necessary constraints. (be sure that you
made public all features that you need to use for make all
constraints). First I make the screw fix using Fix
component button. To do that you must select first the screw
and after that the Fix component button. This button looks like
an anchor.
Sasi Institute of Technology & Engineering, Tadepalligudem
Internship Report on Catia v5
After that, I want to put in contact with the Screw all Washers.
To do that, I need to make two constraints, one Axial
coincidence constraint and one more Offset constraint. I
repeat for each Washer both constraints. You must pay
attention when you made an constraint (direction and if the
offset must be negative or positive).
Now I want to make in contract with last washer first Nut. To
do that I make also two constraints, one Axial coincidence
constraint and one more Offset constraint. I repeat this step
two times for both nuts.
Fig. 3.1 Fig.3.2
3.2 BASIC STEPS;
Using the menu go to File -> New -> Product and click OK
1. Now, you must be sure that you have opened two
toolbars, Product Structure Tools and Constraints.
2. Now you must insert from file the parts that you want to bring
them into an assembly. To do that, you should use the button
Existing Component from Product Structure Tools toolbar.
Be sure that you have selected the tree before or after press this
button. Select all elements and click OK.

A detail view is a partial generated view that shows only
what is necessary in the clear description of the object. It
shows you how to create from the 3D a detail view using
either a circle as callout or a sketched profile. In this
particular case, we create a detail view using a sketched
profile as we create this detail view from an oblong part.
Note that for creating a detail view using a circle

The basic tasks you will perform in the Wireframe and
Surface workbench are mainly the creation of wireframe
and surface geometry you will use to build your part
design. When creating a geometric element, you often
need to select other elements as inputs. When selecting a
sketch as the input element, some restrictions apply,
depending on the feature you are creating. You should
avoid selecting self-intersecting sketches as well as
sketches containing heterogeneous elements such as a
curve and a point for example.
Fig.5.1
The Circle Definition dialog box appears. Use the
combo to choose the desired circle type: Center and
radius, Center and point, Two points and radius,
Three points, Bitangent and radius , Bitangent and
point ,Tritangent. Enter all input as specified. For

example for first option: Select a point as circle
Center.
Select the Support plane or surface where the circle
is to be created. Enter a Radius value. Depending on
the active Circle Limitations icon, the
corresponding circle or circular arc is displayed.
Click OK to create the circle or circular arc.
The circle (identified as Circle.xxx) is added to the
specification tree.
The Spline Definition dialog box appears.
Select two or more points where the spline is
to pass. An updated spline is visualized each
time a point is selected. It is possible to edit
the spline by first selecting a point in the
dialog box list then choosing a button to either:
Add a point after the selected point, Add a
point before the selected point, Remove the
selected point, Replace the selected point by
another point. You can select the Geometry on
support check box, and select a support.
