Building Drawing Project 2022-2023
CATEGORY: RESIDENTIAL PROFICIENCY: GENERAL
OBJECTIVES: All students of the Technical Drawing Class are required to present a portfolio at completion of
the course. The Section THREE (3) Building Drawing Project is aimed at affording the students the
opportunity to put into practice the skills acquired over the period of the program of training. In addition, the
students will demonstrate their abilities and aptitude as boarding draftspersons. Grades will be awarded for
knowledge, Application and Practical Ability.
The Building Drawing project consists of THREE sections:
1) The written component
2) The drawn component
3) The Business Plan
1). The Written Component:
In entirety the written component of the Building Drawing Project requires:
*Cover page, Table of content, Statement of the problem, Conditions, and Design brief and justification.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
The incomplete outline of a floor layout plan for a three-bedroom residence is shown in Figure 2. Draw, to a
scale of 1:50, the entire completed floor plan to include a suitable design for the incomplete section, marked
"A".
CONDITIONS:
The drawing should include:
1. The design should conform to all building regulations and standard drawing practices.
2. ONE Master bedroom and adjoining bathroom
3. TWO additional bedrooms and ONE bathroom
4. Corridor
5. The incomplete section A must be designed to utilize to the fullest the recommended building size
occupant specifications.
6. Layout of newly designed bedrooms and bathroom areas should be shown on the floor plan.
7. The design should attract customers and provide security.
DESIGN BRIEF AND JUSTIFICATION:
This is a statement that highlights the reason for the style of design. It briefly explains with detail, the
reason(s) for the design.
2). The Drawn Component:
The completed project shall include a set of Preliminary drawings for the office.
1) SKETCH (scale 1:50)
2) FLOOR PLAN (scale 1:50);
3) FOUNDATION PLAN (scale 1:50)
4) ROOF PLAN (scale 1:50);
5) ELEVATIONS (scale 1:50) a. FRONT VIEW; b. LEFT SIDE VIEW;
6) SECTION (scale 1:50)
The following shall be taken into consideration throughout the project:
1). SKETCH of the Proposed Building Design. (this is in single lines)
2). FLOOR PLAN: the completed drawing MUST include the following:
i. External and Internal Wall thicknesses
ii. ALL doors and windows
iii. Kitchen appliances and floor/base cupboards
iv. Provision for cabinet in storeroom
v. Bathroom fixtures (toilet and sink only)
vi. Positioning and Names of ALL rooms
vii. TEN important dimensions to indicate room sizes
viii. Two overall external dimensions
ix. SECTION LINE indicating where the section is taken
3). FOUNDATION PLAN: Draw to a scale the foundation plan for the building. The foundation for the
building consists of simple strip footings beneath the foundation walls. Show clearly ALL construction
details.
4). ROOF FRAMING PLAN: the drawing will show the arrangement of the various roofing components
with rafters spaced at 600 mm centres and ALL other roofing structural members:
i. Label ALL roofing structural members to include
a. Ridge board
b. Hip rafter
c. Valley rafter
d. Common rafters
e. Jack rafters
ii. Outline of the building
5). ELEVATION to include the FRONT and LEFT SIDE elevations. The elevations MUST include:
i. Window and door positions
ii. Roof outline and fascia board
iii. Clear indication of ground line and finish floor level
iv. THREE important dimensions
v. Overall height of building from ground level to roof finish level
6). SECTION: should show clearly the following:
i. Foundation
ii. Floor
iii. Walls
iv. Roof elements and slope
v. Vertical dimensions, one of which MUST be the finished floor to ceiling dimension
vi. Show at LEAST six labels with sizes.
SPECIFICATIONS:
(windows and doors can be amended to suit your design/style)
Walls: External –concrete blocks, 150 mm thick, plastered on both sides
Internal – concrete blocks, 100 mm thick, plastered on both sides
Doors: External – solid panel doors, 900 mm wide × 2000 mm high
Internal and Bathroom – Flush doors, 750 mm wide × 2000 mm high
Windows: Double hung, 1800 mm wide × 1200 mm high
Bathroom - glass awning, 600 mm wide x 600 mm high, sill height 1200mm
Roof: Roof Covering – Aluminium sheeting
Fascia board – 50 mm × 250 mm
Rafters – 100 mm × 250 mm @ 600 mm centres with roof overhang of 450 mm
Fascia board – 50mm x 250 mm
Ring/Perimeter beam – 150 x 200 mm
Roof pitch – 25 degrees
Wall plate – 50mm x 100 mm
Foundation: Reinforced Concrete strip footing 200 mm thick x 600 mm wide with a 200mm
concrete block foundation wall filled with concrete
Foundation wall- 200 mm concrete block filled with concrete
200 mm × 200 mm concrete columns on 900 mm × 900 mm concrete boxing
Ground floor level- 450mm
Height of finished floor to top of RC ring beam - 2700 mm.
Print a suitable title and the scale used at the base of EACH drawing.
Dimensions not given are left to the discretion of the candidate.
NOTE: Standard drawing practices and conventions for producing all working drawing plans are to be
followed.
