Eco-Friendly Multi-Use Mop Project

This document provides a project profile for a student's research on creating a three-purpose mop using recycled plastic filler. The student aims to reduce plastic waste in the Philippines and increase work efficiency. Specifically, the project involves grinding used plastic into small pieces to use as filler material in a mop. The mop would serve three purposes - mopping, brooming, and surface cleaning using attached wipes. The student hopes to demonstrate that plastic filler can effectively substitute new plastic in mop production. The research also aims to show the recycled mop is as effective as commercial mops while helping solve the nation's plastic waste problem.

(5) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (not to exceed 200 words)

Plastic bags are widely used around the world and provide serious

environmental and public health risks. The Philippines produces a remarkable 2.7

million tons of plastic garbage annually, of which 20% is thought to wind up in the

ocean. The Philippines is one country in the Global South that has struggled with the

negative effects of using plastic bags as well as the difficulties of passing and enforcing

laws that outlaw this non-biodegradable product. Plastic bottles, plastic bags, and

immeasurably more plastic materials that are thrown in the garbage after being used is

one of the reasons why the Philippines is a high ranking contributor to plastic waste or

pollution in the world.

Nowadays plastics that are already used always belong to the garbage but this

research have the idea of turning it to plastic filler by cleaning and grinding it into small

pieces. The body of the mop itself have this plastic filler and it have new features unlike

ordinary mop such as broom, soap holder, and cleaning wipes. Hence, this research aims

to reduce the plastic waste and to help us work efficiency by helping.

(6) INTRODUCTION
(6.1) RATIONALE/SIGNIFICANCE (not to exceed 300 words)
Sustainable action is the only way to protect the environment and natural

resources. The take-make-dispose model is no longer viable, and industrial practices

have a negative impact on both the ecology and human health. Therefore, in order to

prevent intensive supply and waste generation, a change based on the circularity of

material flows is required. The main idea of this research is to turn plastic waste into a

new product making it a good flow of recycling. The other idea of this product is that it

helps us with our chores making our life easier and less tiring. As I have seen in other

articles using filler can change the future of plastic. For example, the research of Rudolf

Pfaender they use additives during the melting process of the plastic. It’s the same idea

in this research but I choose to change the outcome by making a new product out of it

for efficiency.

The Philippines is one of the nations that contributes the most plastic trash to

the ocean, however there is a lack of data on the extent of plastic waste pollution of

regional marine ecosystems. Not only the Philippines but other nations as well have to

deal with plastic waste as their problem due to companies that produce plastics. In

addition, to solve these type of problem many researchers have come up with making

plastic filler.

The new purpose of this map can be used in three ways. First, it can be used as

a mop. Second, it can be used as a broom. Third, it can be used as a window cleaner or

surface cleaner because of its own cleaning wipes storage. Overall the product of this

research does not only help us work efficient but it also helps our nature.

MATHEMATICAL THEORY INVOLVED

Zero Waste Management Theory

Even if achieving zero waste is not attainable, this idea emphasizes recycling

and reuse in trash management.

Zero waste initiatives are the most efficient and the most efficient means

through which indigenous governments may protect public health, combat climate

change, create green jobs, and advance indigenous culture property. Agriculture, design,

energy, industry, economic development, and community development are all related to

zero waste. Each and every one of the globe produces trash and is inherently a part of an

unsustainable society. (2005) Palmer.

The zero waste strategy aims to increase recycling, decrease waste, decrease

consumption, and make sure that items are built to be reused, mended, or recycled back

into the environment or the market.

Multiple Goals Theory

It is an unavoidable fact of human life to juggle various objectives. The nature

of many (vs. single) goals has become a hotly debated subject over the past two decades.

It discusses the effects of dual-goal relationships and examines goal-conflict

management techniques (i.e., choosing, multitasking, and prioritizing).

This figure shows the theoretical framework of Three purpose mop with plastic fillers

that explains the related theory that helps the study.

(6.3) OBJECTIVES
In general, the goal of this study is to create new products using recycled

plastic rather than newly created plastic in order to reduce the amount of plastic trash in

our country and to create products that can assist us in accomplishing household chores

and work more effectively.

Furthermore, the following specific questions must be answered particularly by

this study.

1). Is there a significant effect of used non-biodegradable plastic as a material in mop

making?

2). Is there a difference between commercialized mop and the recycled mop?

Scope and Delimitation

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether plastic filler can reduce the

amount of plastic waste produced in our country and whether the mop would free up

more time for other tasks. Data collection on the number of plastics not used and the

amount of time left after using the mop will be done daily as part of the investigation.

(7) REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Fillers Used in Plastic

Fillers are generally utilized to reduce plastic usage and waste in our

environment. Minerals and fibers, in addition to plastic fillers. Utilizing natural fibers in

composite materials made of reinforced plastic had a favorable impact on the

advancement of green composites in modern society.

(8) METHODOLOGY
Materials

The body's mop and the hook to hang it are made with plastic fillers made

from recycled plastic that can be found lying around the neighborhood. This makes

storing the item much simpler. To make the mop head we can use an old t shirt and for

the broom head we can make it out of recycled plastic also. Additionally, a push lock

between a mop and broom can be used to tighten the rod. Plastic filler can also be used

to create the wipes container inside the mop's body. The soap holder can also be made

out of the collected plastics by improvising a sheet of plastic.

Methods

Making of the mop

Simply break up the gathered plastics into manageable pieces using a grinder

or saw, keeping some for the broom head. Then, rather than purchasing an existing mop,

we may manufacture our own hook and storage by using the plastic filler to create the

mop's body. We can prevent the homemade plastic holder from falling by drilling the

recycled plastic holder.

Making of mop head

Get an outdated T-shirt that nobody will use. Then slice it into strips without

cutting all the way through. Only cut it on one side so we can spread it out like a sheet

and attach it to the opposite side of the pole.

Making of broom head

First thing is we cut the sleeves of the shirt and the neck of it to have a nice

sheet of cloth. Then we may slice up the recycled plastics thinly and cluster them

together. This method allows us to create an eco-friendly plastic broom out of nothing.

Research environment

The setting for manufacturing the mop might be at home or in a garage with

enough space for easy work and to arrange the supplies we'll need. To protect oneself

from injury, safety equipment including gloves and eyewear will be worn.

Samples

The plastics that are thrown away and won't be used are the study's target

samples. We will search our homes and the surrounding area for potential target samples

to use in this investigation.

(9) EXPECTED OUTPUT AND POTENTIAL IMPACTS

The study's anticipated result is an environmentally friendly mop or broom that can

provide us free time to complete more tasks. The best thing is that as we become more

productive, we also contribute to the restoration of the planet's health.

Neighborhood/Community

This study will reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce. By reducing the

amount of plastic waste being dumped in the trash, we not only benefit our country but

also the environment for the coming generation.

Environment

As the amount of plastic garbage declines, it will assist our ecology to gradually

breathe. A safe and healthy environment can also contribute to human health.

Additionally, it will hasten the environment's recovery from the harm it has endured.
