QUESTION 1 125 MARKS]
(a) A condenser constructed from steel and has 100 horizontal tubes is used to condense
steam at atmospheric pressure. The outside temperature of the tubes wall is
maintained at 98 °C. It is known that the length and outside diameter of the tubes are
0.305 m and 12.55 mm respectively.
(i) Determine the heat transfer coefficient on the surface ofthe tube.
(10 Marks)
(ii) Estimate the mass flowrate of condensate in kg/hr which can be produced
from this condenser.
(5 Marks)
(b) As an engineer, you have been assigned by your boss to evaluate whether it is worth
to replace the current type of condenser in part (a) with a vertical plate condenser
(30 cm wide and 1.2 m high) in order to condense saturated steam at 1 atm. In this
case the maximum temperature can be achieved by the plate was 83°C.
(10 Marks)
QUESTION 2125 MARKS]
A counter flow 2-8 heat exchanger is used to heat ethyl alcohol (with the specific heat of
2670 J/kg.°C) in the tubes from 30 °C to 75 °C at a rate of 2.4 kg/s. The heating is to be
done by water (with the specific heat of 4190 J/kg.°C) that enters the shell at 100 °C and
leaves at 65 °C. Given the overall heat transfer coefficient is 800 W/m2 °C.
(a) Determine the absorbed heat by ethyl alcohol if the heat exchanger is well-insulated.

(b) Calculate the mass flow rate of water.
(2 Marks)
(c) Determine the heat transfer surface area ofthe heat exchanger using
(i) The LMTD method.
(6 Marks)
(ii) The E—NTU method.
(9 Marks)
(d) Explain the possibility of the cold fluid outlet temperature to rise above the inlet
temperature ofthe hot fluid at any location in a heat exchanger.
(2 Marks)
(e) Consider a heat exchanger that has an NTU of 0.1. It was proposed to triple the size
of the heat exchanger and thus triple the NTU to 0.3 in order to increase the
effectiveness of the heat exchanger and thus save energy. Would you support this
proposal? Please answer based on Figure 1.

QUESTION 3[25 MARKS]
Figure 2 shows two parallel disks, each is 2.0 m in diameter directly opposite each other.
The distance between the two disks is 2.0 m. Disk 1 is held at 1000 K by electric heating
and Disk 2 at 400 K by cooling water in a jacket at the rear of the Disk 2. Assume that
both disks are radiating to each other and to the surrounding space at 300K.
(a) Determine the electrical heat input supply to Disk 1.
(16 Marks)
(b) Determine the heat removed by the cooling water at Disk 2.
(4 Marks)
(c) Calculate the new temperature of Disk 2 at steady state condition if the jacketed
cooling water is replaced by insulation wall to prevent heat loss.

QUESTION 4[25 MARKS]
(a) You have been asked to solve a heating problem in one of the process plat operation.
The process involved heating an aluminum cylinder until reached uniform
temperature at 204.4 °C. The cylinder has a diameter of 50.8 mm and is 101.6 mm
long. The aluminum cylinder is directly plunged into a large bath held at temperature
93.3 °C when the cylinder reached the uniform temperature of 204.4 °C during
heating. You need to determine the center temperature value of the cylinder after 60 s
when held in the bath. Use h = 568 W/m2.K, k= 207.7 W.m/K and a = 9.44e-5 m2/s.
(15 Marks)
(b) A rectangular slab of margarine with 10 mm thick at a temperature of 250 K in a
refrigerator is placed in an environment at 310 K. The sides and bottom of the
margarine container can be considered to be insulated by the container side walls. The
flat top surface of the butter is exposed to the environment. Calculate the temperature
at the butter at the surface after 1 h of expose. Consider k = 0.2 W/m.K, cp = 2000
J/kg.K, h = 10 W/m2.K and p = 1000 kg/m3.
