Types of Deviation in Stylistics

The document defines stylistic deviation as departing from what is considered normal or acceptable in language usage. It discusses two types of deviation: internal deviation, which violates norms established within a text; and external deviation, which violates shared linguistic norms. As an example of internal deviation, a film tagline is grammatically parallel but semantically deviant. External deviation is exemplified by a tagline that humorously advertises a celebrity's death rather than the character's demise. Bathos is also defined as a sudden tonal change in a work.

Outline

Introduction

A stylistics deviation is defined by the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary the act of moving away from
what is normal or acceptable. The word deviated itself shows the violation of what is principally
accepted. Deviation in the poetry means deviation of style in poetry.

Before discussing the types

Leech and Short (2007: 44) affirm that properties of language within a text may depart from the norms
of the text itself.

Internal deviation

a writer or language user violates the norm s/he has established in her/his text, or a deviation against a
norm set up by the text itself.

Example:

Tagline from the film A Fish Called Wanda (1988) –

‘A tale of murder, lust, greed, revenge and seafood.’ –

Grammatically paralleled but semantically internal deviance can be seen.

External deviation

a language user violates the norm that s/he shares with other language users.

Tagline of the film House of Wax (2005) –

‘On May 6th … see Paris dies!’

• Humorously advertises the death of the celebrity herself rather than the character Paris Hilton acted.

Bathos

is defined as a sudden, jolting change in the tone of a work
