Mental Health Support for Nurses

Hospital programs are being implemented to help support the mental health of nurses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Studies have shown nurses have experienced higher rates of distress, anxiety, and depression compared to pre-pandemic times. Programs include mental health education to teach stress management and normalize discussing mental health challenges. Research on these programs effects on burnout is still emerging but initial data suggests brief training on resilience may improve well-being for frontline healthcare workers during a pandemic. Ensuring nurses' mental health is prioritized can help address staffing issues and improve patient care.

Hospital Programs to Help Nurses

Improve Mental Health During the

Covid-19 Pandemic

By Jessie Hudock
PICOT Question:
In bedside nursing during the Covid-19 pandemic, what is the effect of
mental health support programs compared to no support programs on
burnout?
Nurses Mental Health

“The mental health status of the nursing workforce has been a chronic concern predating COVID -19. As early as 2005,
a national survey of the work and health of Canadian nurses found one in six nurses reported that mental health
problems interfered with their ability to work, and 10% of the sample met the criteria for depression” (Havaei, 2021).

To better understand the need for research, let’s break down the question at hand:

To ensure all areas of the patient’s care is covered, it is important to start by ensuring all areas of the nurse’s health is covered

● If self-care and mental health is not made a priority, it can affect not only personal relationships, but also those formed
between the nurse and patient
● Many surveys have been done proving “Healthcare workers in “designated” COVID-19 hospitals had two- to threefold higher
odds of distress, anxiety and depression compared with those in non-designated hospitals
● To help reduce these stressors and save the bedside nursing population mental health education and programs that help
with teaching, normalizing, and advocating for those struggling with mental health burden

(Kim et al., 2021)

Studies to Support

➔ Objective Research
◆ Best source is right from the nurse

➔ Surveys Pre and During

➔ Hospital Program Participation

◆ Outcomes

➔ Limits due to time frame

Conclusion

“it appears that the cost-effective training may be useful for improving resilience, which could
further improve psychological well-being for frontline healthcare workers during pandemic”
(Schulz et al., 2019)

● Mental Health disparities have become a highlight of workplace need and

involvement
● Studies show significant growth
● By identifying the key problems they are facing can change the work environment
