Planing and Design Lab (Fertilizer)

1. The experiment aims to compare the effects of moringa leaves, manure, and NPK fertilizers on the growth of tomato seedlings. 2. Tomato seedlings will be planted in pots containing soil mixed with one of the three fertilizers. A control pot with no fertilizer will also be used. 3. The height and number of leaves of each seedling will be recorded every two days over ten days to analyze effects on growth rate. 4. It is hypothesized that seedlings fertilized with moringa leaves will demonstrate superior growth compared to those fertilized with manure or NPK.

Topic: Planning and Designing

Problem: New research by a Latin American company has shown that moringa leaves are a
superior source of nutrients and therefore should be the preferred choice as fertilizers for
farmers. Plan and design an experiment to investigate the claims of that company by comparing
the moringa leaves with the traditional use of manure and NPK.

Hypothesis: The moringa leaves will work better as a fertilizer than NPK and manure as it is also
a plant and thus it contains all the essential nutrients that a plant needs

Aim: To investigate if moringa leaves as fertilizer is better at stimulating plant growth than NPK
and manure by comparing plant growth in seedlings fertilized using the three fertilizers

Apparatus and Materials: Tomato seedlings,Manure,Moringa Leaves,Measuring

Cylinder,Stirrer,Ruler,4 Plant Pots,Loam soil,

Procedure:
[Link] 4 plant pots A,B,C and D
[Link] up 4 moringa leaves in 20𝑐𝑚3 warm water
[Link] a measured amount of fresh loam soil in plant pot A and thoroughly mix with 20𝑐𝑚3 of
the first fertilizer(Moringa and Water Mixture).
[Link] the previous step using the manure in plant pot B and NPK in pot C with an exception
of the last plant pot D,which should not be mixed with any fertilizer
[Link] 3 tomato seedlings of the same type and age in each plant pot about 3cm in depth and
2-3 cm apart.
6. Measure the initial height of the seedlings from the base of the plant to its highest point using
a ruler. Also count the number of leaves. Record this information in a table.
7. Place the pots in an area which is warm and well lit. Keep soil moist by watering every three
days with the same amount of water.
[Link] the plant’s growth every two days over the course of 10 days by continuing to use the
ruler to measure the height of the plant and recording the information in the table. Also continue
to count the number of leaves.
9. Compare the results of the plant seedlings and use them to calculate plant growth rate.

Variables:
Constant-type and age of seedlings, type and amount of soil, growing conditions, growth time
Manipulated-Type of fertilizer; NPK, manure, moringa
Responding- height of plants, number of leaves

Expected results:
The plant fertilized with the moringa mixture is expected to have the most leaves and the
greater change in height thus showing that the moringa mixture was the most effective in terms
of growth rate of the plants. If the results show that the hypothesis is accepted and if not it is
rejected.

Precautions:
Keep the soil moist without overwatering the plants
Ensure that the plants are able to get enough sunlight

Assumptions:
The plants themselves should grow on their own provided that it has enough light and water but
the growth will increase because of the use of fertilizers
