VALVETRONIC ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

■ The Valvetronic system is a BMW variable valve liftsystem[1] which, in combination

with variable valve timing, allows infinite adjustment of the intake valve timing and
duration.[2] The system claims to improve fuel economy and emissions, and negates the
need for a throttle body in regular use.
■ First introduced by BMW on the 316ti compact in 2001,[2]Valvetronic has since been
added to many of BMW's engines. The first application of this technology in a
turbocharged engine was the N55 engine.
■ In internal combustion engines, variable valve timing is the process of altering the
timing of a valve lift event, and is often used to improve performance, fuel economy or
emissions. It is increasingly being used in combination with variable valve lift systems.
WORKING OF VALVETRONIC ENGINE
■ WORKING OF VALVETRONIC ENGINE AND (VVT)

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control) is a system developed
by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of a four-stroke internal combustion
engine, resulting in higher performance at high RPM, and lower fuel consumption at
low RPM. The VTEC system uses two (or occasionally three) camshaft profiles and
hydraulically selects between profiles. It was invented by Honda engineer Ikuo
Kajitani.[1][2] It is distinctly different from standard VVT (variable valve timing) systems
which change only the valve timings and do not change the camshaft profile or valve
lift in any way.
ADVANTAGES

■ Cheap and simple, continuous VVT improves torque delivery across the whole rev
range.
■ VVT and lift systems adjust the timing of the valves to match the operating conditions
of the engine.
■ increased torque and output, better fuel economy, and reduction of nitrogen oxide
(NOx) and hydrocarbon emissions.
DISADVANTAGES

■ Lack of variable lift and variable valve opening duration, thus less top end power
than cam-changing VVT.
■ More complex and expensive
■ the engine may exhibit performance problems, such as rough running and poor
acceleration
SCOPE OF VVT AND VALVETRONIC ENGINE

■ In the past few years, automotive vehicle manufacturers have emphasized

developing hybrid vehicles to achieve better mileage. The positive approach
of the vehicle manufacturers towards auto start-stop technology and VVT
integration in their engines is bolstering the sales of VVT technologies
■ The global VVT & start-stop system market is expected to register a
market share of USD 51.9 billion in the year 2019 at a compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% in the forecast period.
■ For instance, in India, after the implementation of BS-6 norms, vehicle
manufacturers targeting Indian audiences are required to manufacture
vehicles compliant with non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) emission limits
and strict reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The manufacturers
are using VVT technologies to meet these standards.
■ The implementation of the VVT & start-stop system has provided multiple
benefits for vehicle users globally. The substantial advantages delivered by
the systems include improved prolonged effective engine operation and
lesser vehicle maintenance cost. For instance, Toyota, one of the leading
automotive manufacturers, has developed a new and effective VVT & start-
stop system to enhance its engine operation by reducing emission
standards.
