Discussion
In this project, we have chosen the excavator as our Catia model. Excavators are popular
terrestrial vehicles with buckets or claws, arms, rotating cabs, and movable tracks. As a
mechanical engineering student, we can confirm that this model is appropriate for our studies.
The main reason we choose the excavator as our model is because we would like to add some
modifications to the existing model, especially the claw. We observed that the claw needs
some modification to increase the work efficiency and at the same time reduce physical work.
For this model, some of the parts are difficult to be designed in Catia, especially the claw.
The claw has a lot of details that take the student's creativity to design the part. We have also
managed to create some parts slightly different from the original model, as this project
requires us to demonstrate some form of innovation and to be imaginative, but at the same
time we still stick to the main ideas.
This model is divided into four fittings and parts that are track frame, body, arm, and claw.
Each of us four has one part to be designed in Catia. The track frame moves the body around,
the arm is used to control the claw, and the claw allows the operator of the excavator to pick
up large materials.
In matter of the modifications, we increased the diameter of the claw’s surface. By increasing
the diameter, a lot of stuff can be carried at a time and this helps to increase the work
efficiency. We also added more claws attached with strong magnet to the existing model. We
see that this modification helps to carry tiny materials as they were easily attracted to the
magnet.
