Notes to CPA Candidates

THE EXAMINATION The Uniform CPA Examination is delivered in a computer-based format. The final paper-based version of the CPA exam was given in November 2003. You may take the exam one section at a time. As a result, your studies can be focused on that one section, improving your chances for success. In addition, the exam is no longer offered twice a year. During eight months of every year, you may take the exam on your schedule, six days a week and in the morning or in the afternoon. Beginning May 1996, the Uniform CPA Examination became nondisclosed. For each exam section, candidates are required to sign a Statement of Confidentiality, which states that they will not divulge the nature and content of any exam question. Additionally, the AICPA has issued an Interpretation of Rule 501, Acts Discreditable to the Profession, which likewise forbids AICPA members from soliciting or disclosing information concerning the nature or content of specific exam questions or answers. Good luck on the exam. Auditing Modules 1, 2, and 3 Contrary to its stated examination policy, the AICPA recently indicated that it will not be able to update the Auditing and Attestation section to cover the new risk assessment auditing standards until July 2007. Based on this decision, you will find two sets of the Auditing Modules 1, 2, and 3. One set is based on the new changes that will be tested in July 2007. The other set is for the Auditing and Attestation section before July 2007 (the old auditing standards).

Exam Selection Screen

The Exam Selection Screen allows you to select a section for study and determine whether you will study that section in Study Mode or take a simulated exam in Exam Mode. The following information explains in detail how to use this screen.

TOPICS AVAILABLE
The four sections listed below are available for use in this study program. The first section listed in the Select an Exam Section window of the Exam Selection Screen is the default section and will be highlighted each time you open the product. If you wish to select another available section, either click on or highlight the applicable section. Auditing and Attestation Regulation Financial Accounting and Reporting Business Environment and Concepts

MODE SELECTION
The Wiley CPA Exam is a study tool that can be run in either Exam or Study Mode.

Getting Started

Exam Mode
The Exam Mode walks you through a sample examination applicable to the section selected. It simulates actual exam conditions, complete with a timer/clock that shows your time remaining for completing the exam. When you select Exam Mode you will be given an exam of randomly selected questions from all of the questions available for the chosen section. The number of questions you will view depends on the section selected.

Study Mode
The Study Mode is designed to provide you with the tools to zero in on areas that need work and select question types based on your criteria. In the Exam Selection Screen, click on Study Mode to begin studying. In either mode, the Answer File Selection box will appear when the button is selected. The Answer File Selection box allows you to use a previous answer file or begin study with a new answer file. If Exam Mode is selected, the next screen will be the first question of the exam. If Study Mode is selected, the next screen will be the Question Selection Screen.

SAVING AND USING YOUR ANSWERS

The Wiley CPA Examination Review will save the results of each study and exam session. Upon opening a session, you will be prompted to choose the name of an answer file. The first time in, choose New Answer File and name the file appropriately (up to twenty-five characters). It may be useful to distinguish between study and exam mode answer files in the file name. Each subsequent time you run the program you can then choose from new or existing answer files. To allow for the use of the Automatic Question Selection Criteria, you should try to save each session to the same file. We allow the use of multiple answer files to give you flexibility and allow you to tailor your study sessions. You may, for example, want to save each title that you study to a different answer file. You may also want to save study sessions and exam sessions to different answer files. You can then use the exam answer file during a study mode to select from all of the questions you answered incorrectly on the exam. If you select New Answer File, you will then go to the Question Selection Screen (for Study Mode) or the first question in your exam (Exam Mode). If you choose Existing Answer File, select an available answer file from the drop-down list. Select an answer file name and choose OK. You then have the option of starting where you left off in the old session or starting a new session. If you elect to resume, you will be taken to the last question you were on in the old session. Otherwise, you will be taken to the first question in Exam Mode or the Question Selection Screen in Study Mode.

FILE MENU
Save As This option allows you to rename the current answer file and save it as a separate answer file. All previous study or exam sessions, including the most recent session, will be saved under both file names. Exit Exits Wiley CPA Examination Review to Windows. Once the multiple choice questions have been completed, the first simulation is displayed (except for the Business Environment and Concepts topic which does not contain simulations). The Simulation Question Screen is a combination of a number of different types of screens. Simulations typically begin with a Simulation Tab which provides the context for the simulation. Then there will be one or more tabs that include the requirements for the simulation. You may need to toggle back and forth between the Situation and the various requirement tabs to complete the simulation. This is done by simply clicking on the applicable tab. The windows are scrollable to allow you to view the entire situation or requirement. The requirements to simulations may be answered in a number of ways. Solutions may require selections from a drop-down list of possible answers, numeric and monetary inputs, check box responses, or written communications. On the CPA exam, there will be other possible answers because you will have use of a research database from which to cut-and-paste research results. In addition, you may be required to enter formulas into a spreadsheet. While you are able to move between the various requirements tabs within an individual simulation question, you are not allowed to move from one simulation question to a new simulation question. If you try to advance to a new question, a pop-up window will display confirming your actions. You will also be informed that if you try to move to a new question and return to a previous question, your answers will be lost. In Study Mode, if toggled on, the correct answer and reasoning will appear when all boxes for that particular requirement have been answered. To review the reasoning at a later time, just click on the text of the particular completed requirement. Click anywhere on the screen to close the Answer Explanation. When a number is required, enter a dollar sign if the amount is a dollar figure and also enter commas. For example: Enter $12,000 not 12000 NOTE: For the purposes of grading in Study Mode, when you leave a box for the first time for a particular subquestion, that answer is entered and saved as your official answer to that question. Even if you then change your answer, the first answer is what is kept. You may change your answer selection as many times as you want. The first answer is what will show on the Exam Reports.

Reports
EXAM RESULTS
The Exam Results report bases your grade on the total number of questions selected. Your percent correct is calculated by dividing the total problems on the exam (answered or not) with the number of questions correctly answered. The two types of questions, multiple-choice and simulations, are calculated separately. Simulation questions are graded depending on one of three format types. 1. 2. Questions that have text box response fields (e.g., the Evidence simulation) are graded automatically. Questions that have selection choices (i.e., check boxes, drop-down lists, and radio buttons) are graded automatically.

Reporting 3.

15

Questions with essays, forms, tables without text boxes (e.g., the Bonds simulation) are selfgraded.

PROGRESS
The Exam Progress report bases your grade on the total number of questions you attempted to answer. Any multiple-choice question skipped over with no answer being selected is not included on this report. The simulations are based on the exact number of question in the exam. The progress of the simulations is the same result as the Exam Results report. Both the Exam Results and Exam Progress reports keep track of your last three study or exam sessions as long as the same answer file is used for all sessions.

RESULTS BY MODULE
The Results by Module report breaks down your current testing session by the individual modules in your current Study or Exam session.

INCORRECT QUESTIONS
The Incorrect Questions List report gives you a list of the questions that were answered incorrectly along with your answer to that question. Click on the Error Re-Test button to create a session containing only the questions that were answered incorrectly. Please note that the Incorrect Question Report does not include any simulation questions. WARNING: Choosing Error Re-Test will create a new session for either Study or Exam Mode. The current session will no longer be valid.

This report lists the incorrect selection simulation answers. Selection questions are those questions where the user clicks an answer (radio, checkbox, list selection) instead of typing an answer. This report is accessed via the View menu.

VIEW INCORRECT TEXT ANSWERS
