9 VERSION HISTORY .......................................................................................................... 26
The EA-Connect is a single point interface to the CAN network for service or monitoring
purposes. It can be used by the service technician and allows for remote connection by service
staff or supplier technical support.
It converts the machine’s CAN messages into Ethernet messages for interface with IP capable
devices and software tools including the Axiomatic PC-based Electronic Assistant and CAN
Assistant Scope.
It allows the IP address of the Ethernet/CAN Converter to be accessed over the internet for
remote monitoring.
The tool can also be used for monitoring and configuring Axiomatic controllers. It can also be
used for firmware updates in the field. The advantage of this tool is the remote access to the
user’s CAN network for Axiomatic technical support in a “live” customer assist.
Refer to the user manual, UMAX140900, for the architecture, functionality and configuration
parameters of the Ethernet to CAN Converter, AX140900. It also contains technical
specifications and installation instructions of the converter.
Refer to the user manual, UMAX070502, for the Electronic Assistant and the
UMAX070501SCO for the CAN Assistant - Scope.
The majority of Axiomatic PC based software tools support the Ethernet to CAN Converter
(AX140900). One can connect to the machine CAN bus using the Ethernet to CAN Converter
and associated cable (AX070532) in a similar way as when one connects to the CAN bus
using the USB to CAN converter (AX070501 or AX070502). The Axiomatic Electronic
Assistant® (EA) can communicate with the Ethernet to CAN Converter starting from version
5.11.82.0. The CAN Assistant – Scope supports the converter from version 3.0.0. The support
for the CAN Assistant – Visual is planned.
One of the key benefits from using the Ethernet to CAN Converter (AX140900) as a
service or troubleshooting tool, is its remote connectivity.
The converter has one CAN and one Ethernet port. It supports a high-speed CAN with baud
rate up to 1Mbit/s and a fast 100Mbit/s Ethernet. All standard and extended CAN frames,
including data and remote frames, are supported.
The converter contains a web server to setup configuration parameters and monitor the
internal state of the converter using a web browser. The user can also update the converter
firmware using the web browser.
Refer to Section 6.4 and 6.5 for the AX070531 and AX070532 cable drawings.
There are three LED indicators on the front panel of the Ethernet to CAN Converter. A bi-color
“Power” indicator shows whether the unit is powered. It turns red when there is an error on the
CAN power output.
The two Ethernet LED indicators are hardwired to the PHY chip and show the transmission
speed “Ethernet 10/100” and the link/activity status “Ethernet Link/Act”, see Table 1:
The user can also change configuration parameters and upload the new firmware through this
website.
Once you know the part number of the control module (DUT) that you are monitoring,
download the User Manual for that device from www.axiomatic.com. Go to the log-in tab and
enter the password.
Connect the AX070531 and AX070532 cables to the AX140900, computer, machine CAN
network and power source.
Refer to the drawing for the pin out of the AX070531 Ethernet and Power Cable - 1.7m (5.5 ft.),
8-pin M12 A-coded, Unterminated Leads, Ethernet Jack in Section 6.4. Connect the Ethernet
plug to the jack in the PC. Prepare to connect the AX070531 power cable to a battery or power
supply. Only one set of power connections is needed for most applications. Use the BLUE and
BLACK wires to make that power connection to a 24Vdc power supply. The other two power
wires are not necessary. [If connected, they provide more power to flow through the
Ethernet/CAN converter to the device under test (DUT). But we recommend connecting the
DUT to its own power source for complete device functionality. The Ethernet/CAN converter is
limited to a 1A or 2A output and many devices need more current.]
WARNING: Do not switch on the power until your entire set up is complete.
Refer to the drawing for the pin out of the AX070532 CAN Cable - 1.5 m (5 ft.), 5-pin M12 A-
coded, Unterminated Leads in Section 6.5. Connect this cable to the device under test (DUT).
The power from the battery or power source will pass through the Ethernet to CAN Converter
to the device under test (DUT). [But we recommend connecting the DUT to its own power
source for complete device functionality. The Ethernet/CAN converter is limited to a 1A or 2A
output and many devices need more current.]
Lastly, turn on the power for the AX140900 (Ethernet to CAN Converter) with the 24Vdc
power source.

Connect the AX140900 to the web:
If you don’t know the IP address of your AX140900, use the Axiomatic Ethernet to CAN
Converter Discovery Protocol Application to find it. To download the application, go to the log-
in tab in www.axiomatic.com. Enter the password and scroll down to the application located
below the AX140900 documentation in the User Manual page.
Figure 2. Using AxioDisc software to make an initial connection to the AX140900 Ethernet to CAN Converter
Download the Electronic Assistant program (EA) from the website www.axiomatic.com. Go to
the log-in tab and enter the password. Both the Electronic Assistant and the CAN Assistant-
Scope programs and user manuals are under the EA tab.
The following settings are required to allow the EA to work with the AX140900.
Figure 4. Selecting the AX140900 Ethernet to CAN Converter in the Electronic Assistant program.
Once the AX140900 is selected, open the CAN port. The EA will recognize the Axiomatic SAE
J1939 controller that you wish to monitor or configure. For the example shown below, the
AX021610 was selected as the controller under test (DUT).
Now you can use the Electronic Assistant (EA) for monitoring and configuring the module
using the remote LAN connection enabled by the Ethernet to CAN Converter set up.
To use the CAN Assistant – Scope for monitoring the CAN bus messages, open the
application. Refer to the User Manual UMAX070501SCO for details.
The Scope allows you to see the messages on the CAN network from the controller and any
other devices on the CAN network. SAE J1939 diagnostic messages can also be monitored. It
is important to have an understanding of the SAE J1939 protocol for this purpose. The
machine display should be showing the key diagnostic events (active and logged). That
information should be included in any controller troubleshooting investigation.
If you wish to have Axiomatic technical support access your device remotely, email
[email protected] with the details.
We will need to know the public IP address and device port of the AX140900.
We will need to know the serial number and p/n of the controller under question. The
embedded firmware version is also good to know.
If there are any issues with connecting to the device under test (DUT) through a corporate
firewall, please involve your IT department in the conversation to avoid delays.

Converter Configuration:
The converter supports configuration over the internal website running on the device
embedded web server. The default Device IP Address is 192.168.0.34 and the default Web
Server Port is 80. Please, make sure that there are no other devices on this IP address when
connecting the converter for the first time to your LAN for configuration.
To connect to the device, run any web browser and point it to the Device IP Address. It is not
necessary to specify the Web Server Port, if the web server uses a standard port 80.
After successful connection, you will see the device home page, see: Figure 6.
You will need to allow the site to run JavaScript (this setting is default in the majority of web
browsers). If JavaScript is disabled, the website will show a message asking to activate
JavaScript at the top of the web page, see: Figure 7.
The Ethernet configuration parameters are combined into Server and Client groups for
convenience.
The user can change Ethernet and CAN configuration parameters by going to the Settings
page, see: Figure 4 in the UMAX140900. The page can be reached by clicking on the Settings
link on the left side of the webpage.
The Settings page has fields to enter values of the configuration parameters and three buttons:
Save Settings, Discard Settings and Set Defaults.
The Save Settings button will save configuration parameters to non-volatile memory and apply
the new settings. The appropriate converter subsystems will be restarted without rebooting of
the whole converter. The rebooting is available from the Diagnostics screen.
The Discharge Settings button will bring back the original converter settings before editing, and
the Set Defaults button will load the default values of the configuration parameters into the
data fields on the page.
The new configuration parameters are applied immediately after saving. The converter
performs all necessary internal reconfigurations and resets on the fly. If the user changed the
Device IP Address or the Web Server Port, the website will be automatically re-loaded at the
new location.
In case the user leaves the Settings page without saving, all changes will be discarded. The
user can also discard changes by pressing the Discard Changes button.
Once the controller is powered ON and recognized on the CAN network then troubleshooting
gets specific for the problem at hand. Potential areas to check are inputs, operating
temperature and others. After wiring, the configuration should be doublechecked. Setpoint files
are typically saved using the EA program as .xml files. Log the details of the DUT’s firmware
version and setpoint files that show up in the EA program before making changes. If you need
to change the setpoints, the details of how to do this is in the Electronic Assistant User Manual,
UMAX07050X. Please make sure at all times that you use the latest version of the EA found
on the www.axiomatic.com website. It is updated regularly.
Other devices in the system may affect the performance of the DUT as well.
If you wish to have Axiomatic technical support help you with the troubleshooting, please email
them and consider accessing your device remotely. Email [email protected] with the
details. You may also call 1 905 602 9270.
You may also see these issues when connecting the Ethernet to CAN Converter to the
Electronic Assistant.
1. Check that CAN-ENET converter is selected.
If CAN-ENET IP address is not known run AxioDisc software to detect the CAN-ENET.
4. If D.U.T. is powered by the CAN-ENET, check that the switched power output is ON.
Connect to the CAN-ENET by the Web Server.
Check option: CANSwitched Power OutputON
To see the Diagnostics page, Figure , the user should click on the Diagnostics link on the left
side of the webpage.
The Diagnostics page shows the Health Status of the converter together with the CAN and
Ethernet statistics.
The user can refresh the values on the page by pressing the Refresh Status button or reset the
statistic counters by pressing Reset Counters button. The Reboot Converter button activates
the converter rebooting.
The converters do not retain the diagnostic information. All information is lost when the power
is shut down.
The converter Health Status is an aggregated system run-time parameter calculated on the
base of operational statuses of the major device hardware and software components.
The Health Status presents the overall operational status of the CAN to Ethernet Converter,
based on the following rules, see: Table 1.
If the Health Status is different from Normal, the user will see a verbose message on the
Diagnostics web page below the Health Status describing which operational status is causing
a problem.
In case, several operational statuses differ from Normal, all of them will be shown on the
Diagnostics page.
The majority of Axiomatic PC software tools support the Ethernet to CAN converter. They can
connect to the CAN bus using the Ethernet to CAN converter the same way as they connect to
the bus using the USB to CAN converter. The Axiomatic Electronic Assistant® (EA) can
communicate with the converter starting from version 5.11.82.0, the CAN Assistant – Scope
supports the converter from version 3.0.0. The support for the CAN Assistant – Visual is
planned.
