Introduction
Cutting classes is one of the most rampant issue in both public and private
schools as seen in the Philippines. This issue is rampant as will in tertiary
educational institutions where there are no more limits as to when one can or
cannot go outside of the campus and a limit as to when one can or cannot leave
the classroom during a lecture. According to [Link] (2018), cutting classes is
coined term which names that as student don’t attend a class at which your
presence is expected. On an online article by Candy Marabulas (2017) “Cutting
classes as become a trend among young student. But little do they know that there
are certain consequences that come with this. When a student skips classes, they
are missing out on tons of activities and quizzes, putting their grades on the line.
Cutting classes has its negative effect on a student’s performance.” Moreover, “for
all students-cutting class harms performance.” (Taylor, 2012). He also pointed out,
“grave consequences are given to students who cut classes. They will miss
discussion, quizzes and homework due. They’re more likely to end at with failing
grades. According to Viola (2016) , “Every time students cuts class, its inevitable
that they are also cutting their education,“ Going to school is like having a job they
are mostly alike in such reason that you get knowledge. In fact, being always
present in class and getting to school on time are two of the crucial determining
factors of a students success, not just as a student but as a person who will be
managing his own life in the future. It was hypothesized by Taylor III (2012) on a
study that cutting classes harms exams scores, attending pre exam reviews help
exam scores, taking optional exam preparation quizzes helps exam scores, and
earlier exam scores in the semester predict later exam scores. It is because cutting
classes may result into lack of knowledge regarding on your lessons. The lack of
knowledge may also into poor academic performance and sooner may lead into
failing grades. Cutting of classes have its effects with the students’ academic
performance. Failing grades and poor academic performance may be the result of
cutting classes and it would be worst if it will not prevented. Hence, on the other
side of the coin... student who cut their classes or commits truancy will more likely
to fail their grades for they will miss up some lessons in might as will fail to cope
up with the subject. Lastly in year 2019, a bunch of Senior High Student at Iponan
National High School cut their classes and find their way out at the back portion of
the Senior High building which arose an issue to the school officials thus inspired
this research. Also online viral photos about a senior student cut his class just to
go to Singapore which is mind bugling trending issue. Thus, unlocking the dark
side of cutting classes will be unfolded in the said research. This research tackle
about the effects of cutting classes to the academic performance of the senior high
student. How it will affect the performance of the student? Why do students commit
truancy or cut classes?
Due to the rampancy of the issue, this research aims to know the effects of cutting
classes of the senior high students at Iponan National High School on which its
respondents are the said students.
Theoretical Framework
The following theories will support the study:
Social Learning Theory of Albert Bandura . According to Bandura, people learn
by observing, imitating and modeling from one another. Through observation of
other people’s behaviour, attitudes and outcomes of behaviour. Moreover, Albert
Bandura’s self - efficacy theory. Self – efficacy, commonly equated with self -
confidence , is the belief in one’s competence to successfully accomplish a task
and end up at favourable outcome . Some scientists give more importance to self
– efficacy over talent because it determines our chances for success or failure.
Bandura cited 4 sources of self – efficacy :
Mastery experiences: A direct experience of mastering a task and hurdling
obstacle through efforts and perseverance builds up self – efficacy . Hence, Does
it mean students who keep to commit truancy has not mastered some classromm
activities that’s why they resolve to escape class instead of performing and battling
it out with their classmates?
Vicarious experience: By imitating the people we perceive as our models who
succeed through their sustained, efforts, increases our beliefs that we too can
achieve what they have achieved.
Does students who keep in commit truancy are not blessed to have someone
whom they can look up to as role models who can reinforce and helpthem
perservere?
Verbal persuasion: Persuasion from influential people in our lives i.e. parents,
teachers, coach or manager strengthens our beliefs that we have tools to succeed .
Persuasion from influential people encourages to put more effort into task or
activity and sustain fight when things get rough. Therefore, those influential people
will help the students to motivate in their studies. Those people will serve as their
inspiration to whom they draw direction.
Emotional and psychological state: The emotional and psychological state
you’re in influences your self – efficacy. Positive emotions boost our confidence in
our capabilities. Depression or tension on the other hand, is interpreted as signs
of weakness and could dampen their classmates.
According to John Bowlby’s Attachment Theory, a strong attachment with
the parents provides a sense of security and foundation. Children who lack
attachments are less willing to seek out and learn from new experiences.
Therefore ,those students who commits truancy have suffered weak attachment to
their parents. This could be the reason why the students are not motivated to
struggle it out and complete with their classmates. Does it mean that students cut
classes did not have the opportunity to have close opportunities to have close
attachment to parents?

Statement of the Problem
This study aims to understand the said problems and as well as know
the effects of the cutting classes to the academic performances of the Senior
High students at the Iponan National High School. Such questions will arise
and the researchers aim to answer the unfolded side of the coin. Moreover,
at the end of the said research. Satisfying answers will treat the future
problems that will occur in accordance to cutting classes.

Scope and Limitation
The respondent of this research study is the Senior High student
(males and female) of Iponan National High School at Camansi, Iponan,
Cagayan De Oro City. The junior students are not included of the research
study for the researchers wants to focus on the Senior High students
[Link] of the Junior High Students as respondents could enhance
or regret the validity of this initial research.
Significance of the Study
A. STUDENTS
The student who cut classes will know the effects of cutting classes to their
school or academic performance on which they might learn as this research ends.
If a scientific remedy could be found the problem on cutting classes will be
diminished or eradicated.
Higher probability of students will pass and graduate if cutting classes will
be resolved.
Graduate have better future for them and their families.
B. TEACHER
Teachers will be equipped with a research thus they can treat this problem
objectively.
Teachers will not be annoyed when students cut class but instead they can
formulate a systematic approach to it.
They will no longer have to beg for consideration or sympathy to teachers
in order for their children to pass the subjects.
They are assumed that their children can have a better future.
C. SCHOOL ADMINISTRSTION
The problem will be addressed properly thus it will be treated accordingly.
Proper precautions will be implemented and procedures will be processed in due
time in order to avoid and treat the said problem
D. Parent
They will no longer have to beg for consideration or sympathy to teachers
in order for their children to pass the subjects.
