Patriotism
Bawat Kawani Lingkod Bayani
1. Heroes are ordinary people with extraordinary accomplishments.
They come from all walks of life.
2. Not all heroes are dead heroes. It is what they were able to
accomplish that made them heroes.
3. Heroes were able to accomplish so much because of their passion
which cannot be compromised and their focus is on benefiting
humanity not self.
4. All government employees can be heroes when passionate about and
focused on providing service excellence.

Patriotism
Exercise: Yes or No
• I will fight for my country, my government and my people right or wrong because I
am a Filipino.
• I will oppose my government’s policies and actions when they do not reflect true
Filipino character and aspirations.
• I will support the fight of my country (e.g joining war) only when it is just.
• I will love my country only when it gives me my liberty, education and well-being.
• I will make sure that my country and my people lives with moral judgment and
promote moral values at home and abroad.

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism
Extreme Patriotism

The paramount interests of one's country override any

moral consideration with which they might come into conflict.

“our country, right or wrong,”

I will fight for my country, my government and my

people right or wrong because I am a Filipino.

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism
Robust Patriotism

One can oppose one's country's government in the name of the

country's true character, history, and aspirations

I will oppose my government’s policies and actions when

they do not reflect true Filipino character and aspirations.

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism
Moderate Patriotism

It acknowledges the constraints morality imposes on the pursuit of our

individual and collective goals.
For instance, it may require the patriot to fight for his country,
but only in so far as the war is, and remains, just.

I will support the fight of my country (e.g joining

war) only when it is just.

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism
Deflated Patriotism

We owe our country our life, our education, our language, and,
in the most fortunate cases, our liberty.

I will love my country only when it gives me my

liberty, education and well-being.

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism

All four types of patriotism reviewed so far seek to

defend and promote what might be termed the worldly,
i.e. non-moral, interests of the patria:
its political stability, military power, riches, influence
in the international arena, and cultural vibrancy

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Patriotism
Ethical Patriotism

The patriot would seek to make sure that

the country lives up to moral requirements and promotes moral values,
both at home and internationally.

I will make sure that my country and my people

lives with moral judgment and promote moral
values at home and abroad.

MODERN DAY HERO –
EFREN PEÑAFLORIDA
Pushcart educator named CNN Hero of the Year

• "Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor,
man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one
great tapestry, Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have
to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to
the next one in need.
• "So to each and every person inside this theater and for those who
are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed.
Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to
serve. As I always tell to my co- volunteers ... you are the change
that you dream, as I am the change that I dream, and collectively
we are the change that this world needs to be."

CSI. Shaping the Servant-Hero towards Public Service Excellence.

Principles of Patriotism

1. True patriotism isn’t simply about waving the flag

2. Patriotism is about preserving, fortifying, and
protecting our democracy.
3. True patriots don’t hate the government
4. Patriots don’t pander to divisiveness.
