Writings

Write an article talking about the students’ mental health for the school magazine.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP

Many times, being a student is not easy. It is difficult to cope with the pressure of pass all your
exams, being social active, do exercise and all the things a teenager is supposed to do.

In the last times, the number of students having mental health problems have increased
brutally. That is due to the fact that we were not taught to ask for help. Unfortunately, mental
diseases are still not well seeing by the society and that is a great problem. Because of that, I
am writing this article to tell you that you must not be afraid to ask for help.

If you do not feel well, have anxiety of you simply need to talk to someone, ask for help. The
school's mental health club will open on Monday, so I invite all of you who need it to go and
ask for help without any fear. The club will have a psychologist and support groups.

It is completely normal not to feel well, so do not be afraid and cheer up!

Your teacher has asked you to write your response to the following statement taken

from a recent newspaper article:

Is it true that we help the environment when we plant a tree?

Write about:

– clear the air

– ecosystems

– ............. (your own idea)

Planting trees is a simple action that can improve our life, air, and environment quality. I agree
with the idea that we help the environment when we plant a tree because different reasons
that I will explain below.

First of all, it is obvious that humans need oxygen to live and thanks to trees, plants and in
generally to the nature, we are able to breathe good quality air. Planting trees can help to
purify air because the trees’ sheets absorb pollutant gases such as nitrogen, ammonia… This
also helps to reduce the global warming or climate change because those pollutants are bad to
the atmosphere.

Moreover, the natural shade given by the trees helps to reduce the heat generated in the
pavements of the street and with that, the temperature. Other point is that planting trees aid
to strengthen soils and biodiversity providing secure spaces to wildlife.

In my opinion, there are many environmental benefits of planting a tree anywhere and I
reckon that it is always a good idea!

You have received a letter from your English-speaking friend Alice.

My college is aiming to become as environmentally friendly as possible, starting with

recycling and a new heating system.

The students have been asked to make suggestions too, so I’m looking for ideas. Is your

college green? Do you do anything to help the environment which might be useful at

our college too?

Thanks,

Alice

Now write your letter.

Hello Alice,

Thanks for your email, I’m glad to hear from you!

I think that it’s amazing that your college wants to become environmentally friendly. Mine,
unfortunately is not. Here there’s no recycling bins, there aren’t machines to fill your own
water bottle and so on.

However, I try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, I’m trying not to use too much
plastic, every day I carry my glass water bottle to class and I try to follow the 3R rule: to
reduce, to reuse and to recycle.

Oh, by the way, I can give you some ideas or suggestions which could be useful to your college.
I think that one great idea could be that there where machines to fill your water bottle and
that every time you refill that, the machine gives you a point. You can accumulate those points
and spend them in the cafeteria.

Another idea is to change straws and plastic containers for cardboard because it’s more
sustainable. Well, I hope my college does this kind of things soon.

Let me now the changes soon!!!

Al the best,

Emilia.
