Review of the Related Literature
Elderly people are vulnerable individuals in which they require help and suppport. They tend to
get weaker that it gives them difficulties in making their everyday tasks and mobility. According to
Andersson GB, "Muscle weakness has been reported as a risk factor for the conditions of Low back pain
(LBP) and decreased mobility function". It has been said that muscle weakness is a cause in decreasing
the mobility of an elderly.
“Pain is more common as we age, but not necessarily a fact of life.” according to Alcoa, TN. We
tend to feel different pains as we grow older which is inevitable. "Joint pain may affect the function of
the joint, and can limit a person’s ability to do basic tasks" is stated by Andrew S., it reduces the ability
of an individual to move or do different tasks everyday.
"Muscle loses size and strength as we get older, which can contribute to fatigue, weakness and
reduced tolerance to exercise" on the other hand, "joint pain can be debilitating where basic
movements, such as walking up a flight of stairs or sitting in a low chair, can become obstacles."
according to Houston. Both joint discomfort and muscle weaknesses have different effects in the
mobility of the elderly and in the everyday tasks in which an elderly can do.
