Document For Pipe Jacking Works

The document provides details on the pipe jacking method statement, including materials, plant and machinery, manpower, and construction procedures. Sheetpile cofferdams will be used to excavate jacking and receiving pits. Pits will be excavated in stages, with steel H-beams placed to form walers before driving in sheetpile walls. Upon reaching the design depth, the pit base will be leveled with concrete to form a working platform. Jacking pipes will then be installed from the jacking pit to the receiving pit using a manshield machine.

f) A flat platform is prepared prior to the commencement of the pit excavation works.

6.2 Pit Construction Works

6.2.1 Sheetpile Cofferdam
The Sheetpile cofferdam is to be used at jacking pit and receiving pit for the following sizes (but
not limited to the followings):-
Pit Pit Size
Jacking Pit 5.0mX3.0m
Receiving Pit 4.0mx3.0m

a) A 1.5m depth of soil is to be excavated to form a base for the H-Beam.

b) Steel H-Beam 305mmx305mm is placed on ground at the four side of the pit forming a
rectangular shape waler. The waler is welded together by competent welder.
c) Sheetpile FSP3A is drive at the perimeter of the waler beam by means of excavator.
d) The width of the trench shall not be more than 50mm wider than the sheetpile cofferdam
dimension in both directions. Voids created outside the pit shall be backfilled within the same
day of sheetpile installation.
e) The excavation and placing of wailer beam is to be done in stages.
f) The excavation works is carried out by means of manual digging using hand tolls and pneumatic
tools such as pick hammer and jack hammer if hard materials are encountered. Manual rock
splitting technique or rock blasting will be used if encounter boulders or bedrock.
g) Upon reaching the formation level, the base is then clean and mass concrete shall be used to
form a working platform at for machine base.
h) Step ‘a’ to ‘f’ is repeated for construction of jacking pit and receiving pit.
i) In case of sand blowing and piping occurs in sandy layer or basal heave in collapsible soil, soil
stabilization by mean of jet grouting to be executed where necessary to cutoff the inflow of
groundwater to less permeable layer for excavation.

6.2.2 Precast Concrete Caisson
Precast Concrete Caisson shall be used for jacking pit for the following sizes (but not limited to
the followings):-
Pit Pit Size
Jacking Pit ID: 3.6m
Receiving Pit ID: 2.1m

a) The top 600mm of soil to be removed. The precast concrete caisson to be installed at the
excavated hole.
b) Further 600mm depth of soil to be removed. The caisson ring to be lower to further 600mm
deep and a new ring to be installed on top.
c) Step ‘b’ to be repeated until the caisson ring reached to the proposed formation level.
d) If the underground water or seepage is encounter or soil strata are found different from the soil
investigation during excavation, the designer shall be notified immediately for necessary design
review.
e) Dewatering to be carried out by mean of a water pump at the bottom of the caisson or point
well system if required.
f) In case of sand blowing and piping occurs in the sandy layer or basal heave in collapsible soil,
sheetpile cofferdam or jet grouting shall be used to cut off the inflow of groundwater to the less
permeable layer before proceeding with excavation.
g) The excavation works is carried out by means of manual digging using hand tolls and pneumatic
tools such as pick hammer and jack hammer if hard materials are encountered. Manual rock
splitting technique or rock blasting will be used if encounter boulders or bedrock.
h) Upon reaching the formation level, the base is then clean and mass concrete shall be used to
form a working platform at base.

6.3 Pipe Jacking Work
6.3.1 Pipe Jacking Work: Manshied Method (ID/OD: 900mm/1200mm)
a) After the jacking have been completed, the alignment and the invert level of every entry
portal will be delineated and marked inside the jacking pit.
b) A steel plate of 50mm thick shall be erected behind the hydraulic jack. Formwork shall
also be put up to prepare for the casting of the thrust wall.
c) The thrust wall shall be constructed using Grade 20 ready-mixed concrete.
d) Once the thrust wall is constructed, the hydraulic jacks shall be placed against the thrust
wall in a prefabricated frame.
e) Guide rails, made up of H-beams shall be aligned in accordance to the alignment and
invert level and welded to the sheet piles to form a launching platform for the manshield.
f) First place pilot pipe in position true to line and level and jack into the ground. Check line
and level using laser levelling equipment.
g) Excavate the soil/rock inside the pilot pipe using manual equipment/hand tools, retrieve
excavated materials to jacking pit pipe end. The gap between the pilot pipe and front face
of the soil/rock will be always minima. 2 workers are to enter into the pipe at one time.
One (1) Standby person to be stationed at the bottom of the pit and another one (1)
standby person to be stationed on top of the pit at the ground level. The worker is at the
4 working location to be rotated at each removal of 2 bucket of earth which is estimated
about 15minute.
h) Then follow with the first length of reinforced concrete pipe. Check line and level using
laser levelling equipment. Repeat the jacking and excavation operation.
i) Place the second reinforced concrete pipe on the guide rail by proceed jacking and
excavating. Checks line and level at each new pipe length installed.
j) Repeat step `g' to `i' until up to the required distance of the crossing to be pipe jacked.
k) Horizontal alignment of the pipeline will be checked by plumb and offset or by using a
laser guide. The vertical alignment will be checked by using a levelling instrument.
l) If the alignment or level of the pipes is deviated, the pilot pipe can be adjusted.
m) The pipeline will be checked and reported for final alignment at completion of the
crossing.
n) The jacking operation will be continued right underneath the road crossing.
o) Should the jacking works encountering hard material/rock, a pneumatic breaker will be
used to break the material into a manageable size to enable removal from the pilot pipe.
Manual rock splitting technique or rock blasting will be used if encounter boulders or
bedrock. A smooth outer periphery of the excavation will be maintained when rock is
encountered.

6.4 Dismantling Pit

a) Once the manhole has been installed, the jacking pit and receiving pit are ready to be
backfill.
b) The backfill material shall be excavated earth. (By others)
c) For sheetpile cofferdam: H-beam will be dismantled in stages progressively with the
backfilling. Sheetpile will be extracted once the backfilling reached the ground level.
d) For concrete caisson: Concrete caisson to be left-in at buried in the ground.
e) The ground will be reinstated to the original condition. (By others)
