History of Dance

Francisca Reyes-Aquino. in 1921, was given the task y DR. Jorge Bocobo, president
of UP to present a program of pHILIPPINE FOLK DANCE FOR SOME FOREIGN VISITORS
- Mother of Philippine Folk dance

1924 - 1926 she made a collection of folk songs, dances and games which become the
content of her Master's thesis which also began dance notation on the country.
The work revised and published into a book entitled Philippine Folk Dances and
Games.

In 1949, Mrs. Aquino, organized the philippine folk dance society which aimed to
promote the development and the teaching of folk dances.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FOLKDANCE

1. dance begin and end with a saludo


2. in general, dancers are far apart, distance abt 6-8 ft from each other is normal
3. there is very little, if any, body contact although holding hands is common
not all times have a body contact
4. most of the dances, done in pairs and hand movements play a very important role
5. many of our dances are done in long formation
6. our dances are performed by both young and old, and by both sexes.

OCCUPATIONAL DANCES
depicts action of a certain occupation, industry or human labor
ex: can be seen in festival dances, planting, harvesting, pounding

RELIGIOUS OR CEREMONIAL DANCES


performed in connection with religous vows and ceremonies
ex: putong, sta. clarang pinung - pino

COMIC DANCES
depicts funny movements for entertainment
ex: kinoton

GAME DANCES
dance with play elements
ex: pabo, lubi - lubi

COURTSHIP DANCES
depicts love making
ex: carinosa "our national dance"

WEDDING DANCES
performed during wedding fists
ex: pandang - pandang, pantomina

FESTIVAL DANCES
suitable for special occasions or any social gatherings
ex: kuratsa, la jota, pandanga

WAR DANCES
shows imaginary combat or duwell
ex: sasagayan, palo - palo, maglalatik

DANCE FORMS

classical dance - can any be religious dance or entertainment

classical ballet -

modern dance - characterized by natural and through expression by human body and
soul, developed by Isadora Duncan, more on flexing

contemporary dance - combination of ballet and modern dance

folk dance - communicates the customs, beliefs and occupations of a region or


country

ethnic and tribal dance - ex: sinulog

recreational dance - for education, social or for health benefits, done for
amusement, entertainment and leisure
ex: zumba, yoga, aerobics

social and ballroom dance - "siblings", performed for recreation, different only on
historical roots, for the purpose of social gatherings
*dance sport - for competition

creative dance - end product of movement exploration


ex: jazz, lyrical dance, interpretative dance

popular dance - ex: jazz, hiphop
