Soil Types and Characteristics Analysis

This document discusses soil types found in Ontario, Canada. It provides details on the Plainfield, Walsingham, and Waterin soil types. The Plainfield soils are usually fine sand with a thin, weakly developed Bt horizon. Walsingham soils are generally rapidly to imperfectly drained with a thick B horizon. Waterin soils are saturated for prolonged periods.

Q.

1 Answer

a) Sediment generally consisting of medium to fine sand and coarse silt particles which
is well stored and poorly compacted. Individual grains may be rounded and show
signs of frosting.
b) Course textured Eolian parent material
c) Material have been transported and deposited through wind action e.g. shallow
deposits of sand and coarse silt and loess
d) Roman numerals are prefixed to contrasting master horizon to indicate lithological
discontinuities either within or below the solum.
e) None of our soils contain roman numerals in horizon designation.

Q.2 Answer

a. Our soils (plainfield and walsingham) are usually fine sand textures. These soils are
suitable for wide range of special crops e.g. tobacco is grown extensively on these
soils. These soils are susceptible to wind erosion while planting of cover crops reduce
the risk of erosion. Whereas waterin soils are coarse textured soils with poor
drainage due to high water tables occur in these soils. These soils are suitable for
wide range of special crops. Compaction can occure when these soils are too wet. No
till practices for fall crops should considered for these soils.
b. Plainfield Soils…………………..complex steep slope

Walsingham Soils…………………..simple steep slope

Waterin soils………………………simple steep slope

c. Plainfield Soils………………………….. 2-5% (d)

Walsingham Soils……………………2-9% (d)

Waterin Soils…………………………… less than 2% (d)

Slope class is level

Q.3 Answer

a. 7E-2
b. Mean Annual temperature 7-9oC

Mean Annual precipitation 840-900mm

Q.6 Answer

Order of plainfield soils is Entisols because these soils lack distinct pedogenic
horizons climate and PM key.

Order of Walsingham soils is Regosolic because these soils are generally rapidly to
imperfectly drained and have thick B horizon

Order of Waterin soils is Organic because these soils are saturated with water for
prolonged periods.

Q. 7 Answer

Plainfield…. Brunisolic Gray Brown Luvisol because these soils contain Thin,
weakly developed Bt horizon which overlies Ck horizon which occurs at 195 cm depth

Walsingham… Regosol and Humic Regosol because in these soils weakly developed
Btgj horizon is absent

Waterin…. Mesisol and Humisol because these soils contain high organic matter
contents.

Q. 8

Walsingham Orthic Regosol 0.R

Cumulic Regosol CU.R

Gleyed Regosol GL.R

Gleyed Cumulic Regosol GLCLJ.
