1.2. X-Rite (Real World Lens)

The document discusses how X-Rite, which traditionally produced equipment to match colors in industrial settings, was able to expand into new markets by realizing their technology could also be used to match teeth colors in dentistry. This allowed X-Rite to become a leader in color matching for digital photography, dentistry, and paint colors. The expansion likely required changes to X-Rite's organizational structure and processes to support the new customer base.

1.2 REAL WORLD LENS (X-RITE)
X-Rite The management of innovation does not need a radical shift in a product; instead, it can
be as simple as a fresh insight on how a product can be used. X-Rite traditionally produced
equipment to match colors in industrial settings. Thus, an auto manufacturer would test to ensure
that their sky blue was consistent on all cars. The innovation that occurred for the firm was that
matching paint had similarities to matching the color of an individual’s teeth in a dentist’s office.
Prior to this insight by X-Rite, the typical method of matching the color of teeth was for the dentist
to hold a card with different variations of white and seek to judge which one matched the color of
the patient’s teeth. The nature of the X-Rite equipment had to be changed to a form that was more
accessible and user friendly than the industrial version. Issues such as hygiene related to the
product also became part of design for the first time. However, the technology was the same as
before. This innovation insight allowed X-Rite to move into a profitable new market and become
a major competitor in this area. X-Rite has become the leader in color matching in digital
photography, dentistry, as well as paint color in industrial applications.
1. What other uses can you think of for X-Rite’s technology?
- X-Rite’s technology can be used in garment’s quality checking and assurance. It can help
to check and minimize variations (too light or too dark) in color specially when producing
large quantities of colored shirts/pants with similar color. Though visual inspection can be
done, but through this technology we can accurately distinguish which of the ingredients
maybe lacking or too much in creating specific colored garments.
2. How do you think the expansion of their customer base changed their organizational structure?
Did this change of customer base change their organizational processes?
- Yes, typically business that expands undergone several innovation processes like
reengineering or restructuring. Expanding your business does not necessarily mean
adding manpower to sustain and make it work and profitable. It is typically thinking what’s
the best to do in order to make things work with minimal resources at the same time
delivering the needs of the customers efficiently. Through this, organizational processes
will be improved ensuring success and continuous growth and development.
3. What does this tell you about what happens in organizations when new uses for old technology
emerge?
- Old technology helped every company in attaining certain goals and objectives (as a part
of their mission and vision), but when it comes to strategies, they should learn to embrace
changes/innovations in order to meet the changing needs of the people. Evaluation and
control plays a vital role in implementing their strategic perspective. This will greatly help
them to move forward.
