At the end this lesson, the students shall be able to:

b) Identify the key elements of Debate and Argumentative Text;
c) Write their own argumentative essay; and
d) Learn and have the ability to debate intelligently.

A. MOTIVATION
At this moment, we will have a fun game that will teach -(students listen attentively)
you how to disagree in an evidence-based way. This is
called “I could disagree more”

I’ll group you into two groups; one group for all boys and
one group for girls.

Here is the topic:


Which animal makes the best pet? A cat or a dog?

Dogs will defend by Boys -(students follow the instruction)

B. LESSON PROPER
-So our topic for today is all about Understanding

1. Conviction, which is based on logic or correct
reasoning; and
2. Persuasion, which is the emotional aspect of an
argument.

-now, let’s discuss the Correct proportion of
conviction and persuasion in an argument.

In general, a person should use more of the element of


conviction in an argument than in persuasion. The
following factors will help to determine the amount of
conviction or persuasion to be utilized: -(Students listen attentively)
1. Use more conviction if the audience is an intelligent
and highly educated group.
2. Use more conviction if the audience is favorably
disposed towards the question,
3. Use more persuasion if action is desired.

My question is, How to be a Good debater?


Here are some factors to be a Good debater:
a) Sourcing your facts and information;
b) Clearly instructing your points;
c) Considering and listening to what others are saying; -(Students listen attentively)
and
d) Delivering your argument properly.

Moreover, the following are guiding principles for


formulating The Subject of a Debate:
1. The subject must be expressed in a complete
sentence and has a complete thought.

2. You should select a subject which interests you.
3. In wording the proposition, choose the exact words
that denote the meaning the proposition is meant to
convey.
4. The proposition should be so worded that the
affirmative side has the burden of proof.
5. The wording of the proposition should give neither
side an advantage over the other.

Take the proposition: Resolved: That all Colleges should


abolish the undesirable game of basketball. The word
“undesirable” already implies that it should be abolished.

The proposition should be stated thus:
Resolved: That all colleges should abolish the game of
Basketball.

Argumentative writing sometimes called
Persuasive Writing because it seeks to convince
readers to support a stand on a certain issue. -(Students listen attentively)
It also requires the writer to examine a topic or issue
which involves the collection, generation, and evaluation
of exhibits or evidences. It further emphasizes the
writer’s agreement or disagreement on a particular
proposition.

-One of the most common forms or argumentative


writing is argumentative essay.
An Argumentative Essay is an essay that presents a
stand on a given preposition or issue through the
presentation of its pros and cons.
-the main objectives of argumentative essay are to
persuade and convince.

-The following are the Elements of Argumentative


Essay:
 Claim -(Students listen attentively)
 Reasons behind the claim
 Evidence to support claim

Here are the patterns on how will you going to write your
argumentative essay:
