Tool Configuration Details – Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow

* Primary Inputs are the XML input file and/or the INPF file
* Primary Output is the Binary Universal File (*.bun)

Additional inputs are the files needed to perform restarts, and are extracted from
Teamcenter if they exist.

Restart files can also be saved back into Teamcenter, if they exist after the solve.

Tool launch start-to-end – Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow

• Start the Simcenter 3D -

Thermal/Flow tool with a CAE 3D
Analysis IR with a CAE Solution
dataset.
• Such a dataset is used by
Simcenter 3D to store the *.sim file.
• One can generate a Simcenter 3D -
Thermal/Flow XML input file from
Simcenter 3D, and this will be saved
within the same CAE Solution
dataset
• Alternatively, if an INPF file is
present within the CAE Solution
dataset, that can be used to launch
a Thermal only-simulation.
• If both file types are present, the
XML

2018 will take priority.

• Cont’d
• The CAE Solution dataset can
contain multiple *.xml input files. If
more than 1 such file is found, the
system will prompt the user to pick
the file that needs to be used for the
Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow
launch

• In the Launch Simulation Tool popup

dialog, optionally change the “Temporary
OS Location” (this is the location where all
the modified files or newly created files
from the current tool launch MUST reside
in order to be imported into Teamcenter)

• Optionally, enable the runtime parameter

for restart files.
• If enabled, the Simcenter 3D -
Thermal/Flow solver will recognize any
restart files extracted from Teamcenter,
and use them in a restart analysis.
When complete, the solver will also
rename the restart files to have suitable
extensions, so that they can be
uploaded to Teamcenter.

• Optionally choose the “Display Progress

Monitor on Launch” (the progress monitor
will show up after the actual tool is
launched)

• The progress monitor can be invoked later

via the tool menu View → Simulation Tool
Progress Monitor

• The Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow Solution

Monitor will appear, showing the
progression of the simulation.

• When the simulation completes, the solver

will have generated new files, saved under
the temporary OS location.
• The TC process will automatically import
the results *.bun file, and the *.log file.
• The job in the Simulation Tool Progress
Monitor will change its status to
“COMPLETE”

restart files is enabled, additional files will
be automatically imported by the TC
Process

• The Simcenter 3D Results Viewer tool can

be invoked on the same CAE 3D Analysis
IR to post-process the Simcenter 3D -
Thermal/Flow results.

Alternative Dataset

• Alternatively, create a CAE Simcenter 3D - Thermal Flow dataset, and use the
CAE Manager file explorer to upload all of the relevant files to that dataset.

Running on a Cluster

• Note:
• Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow can be configured to run in parallel on a
cluster by submitting the job to a scheduler. For more information, please
refer to the Simcenter online help:

• Alternatively, the Simcenter 3D - Thermal/Flow simulation tool could be
configured to run through the Teamcenter Dispatcher.
