Description

Is there a clear and straight forward document explaining the relationship between the PFR and the
three fault classifications? Please comment on the questions noted below:

1/ Not all Class 1 fault are announced on the ECAM. What determines whether a system producing a
Class 1 message should have that message directed via the FWC as well as the CFDIU?
2/ Would it be true to suggest that only Class 1 and 2 faults appear on the PFR?

3/ The Status page only displays "Active" faults on the ground. During flight are the crew able to
perceive anything but Class 1 faults?

Solution

1/ Class 1 BITE fault message correspond to failures that have an operational cockpit event.

Class 1 fault are normally (with few exception) associated to cockpit effects that are reported in the
logbook by the flight crew.

Cockpit effect can be:

 either an ECAM warning

 a flag on the ECAM or the EFIS display
 an Advisory displayed on the ECAM
 invalid function such as a missing audio signal
 amber crosses on a system page displayed on ECAM
 a local failure displayed in the cockpit

To illustrate this, please find attached a synoptic describing relationship between the CFDS, the FWC
and the system BITE (A320 OMS architecture)

This is why some CLASS1 faults are associated to ECAM warnings while some others are associated to
other cockpit effects (ref list above)

Airbus recommend to review the introduction section of the TSM (ATA 00) para 3. "Philosophy and Use"
and para 4. "How to use the CFDS".

2/ Airbus confirm that only CLASS 1 and CLASS 2 fault messages are transmitted by the various system
BITEs to the CFDIU for memorization during the flight and PFR elaboration at the end of the flight.

CLASS 3 fault are memorized in each system BITE but are not transmitted in normal reporting mode.
Using the CFDS function AVIONICS STATUS, the operator may display on ground the list of systems
affected by at least one CLASS 1 or 2 or CLASS 3 fault.

The operator may then interrogate in Interactive mode each system BITE to display the memorized
faults (Last Leg Report / Previous Leg Report / Ground Report / TSD).

3/ Class 1 / 2 / 3 fault messages are only available from the CFDS and are normally dedicated to
maintenance use:

 In flight, via CFDS FLIGHT MENU, it is possible to access to the CURRENT LEG REPORT and the
CURRENT LEG ECAM REPORT. These reports may also be printed or sent via ACARS.
 On ground, via CFDS GROUND MENU, it is possible:
o to access to the LAST LEG REPORT, the PREVIOUS LEG REPORT, the SYSTEM REPORT/TEST
interactive mode
o to print the Post Flight Report

Please refer to AMM 31-32 for further information.

After engine shutdown (FWC flight phase 10) and up to next engine start (FWC flight phase 02), the
ECAM STATUS page displays under title MAINTENANCE STATUS the list of systems for which the FWC
has computed a Maintenance Status based on data transmitted by these systems.

Then, it is operator’s responsibility to set up procedures:

 to record maintenance status occurrences

 to manage remaining time before repair

CLASS 2 fault messages having no consequence on system operating condition, no "cockpit effect"
information is provided to the crew in case of CLASS 2 failure in flight. On ground, after engine
shutdown, STATUS page will display Maintenance Status.
