related to the succession of dramatic states
that a dance piece may have.
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
BEAT-The beat is the basic unit of a rhythmic measure used to determine
the time in both choreographic and musical language.
TEMPO-The tempo is a term borrowed from music but used with the same
meaning in dance.
ACCENT-Accent is the dominant beat of the music measure, usually the first
beat of the measure.
PHRASING-The phrasing is the fitting of dance steps
and figures to recurring patterns of music.
ELEMENTS OF RHYTHM
MEASURE- The measure is a sequence or unit of rhythm or a set of pulse
beats.
INTENSITY-Intensity is the relative force or strength; the depth of feeling or
concentration.
DANCE COUNT-The dance count specifies the sequence of steps and
whether one or two musical beats should be applied.
RHYTHMIC PATTERN IN DANCE
Three types of Rhythm Pattern
SINGLE RHYTHM- This is one step taken for two beats of music. The step is
taken on the first beat with an added tap (toe step), brush step, kick or
"hold" taken on the second beat.
DOUBLE RHYTHM-This is two steps taken on two beats of music, such as in
marching. In this rhythm pattern, the dancer starts with one foot and ends
with the opposite foot.
TRIPLE RHYTHM- This is three small steps taken
for two syncopated beats. Examples this is used
are the Samba and the Cha-Cha.
1979. Ann T. Kilbride and A. Algoso.
