Building Services Syllabus
Course Description:
This course prepares the student for jobs in the Building Maintenance
industry. The Building Maintenance industry is is a broad field that incompences many fields
including carpentry, woodworking, masonry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, flooring, tile work
and painting.
In Building services we strive to do interesting projects while staying within the boundary of our
curriculum. Some of our past projects include building a Hobbit House during our courtyard
project (landscaping & masonry). Wooden Longboard surfboards (woodworking). Wooden Boats
(woodworking). And several different buildings including a free standing full bath (carpentry,
plumbing, & ceramic tile work).
Course Objective:
Students will become proficient in a broad range of diversified Building
Maintenance skills. They will be taught how to carry out the work of these varied trades, and
then also how to maintain the work.

Required Materials:
Students are required to wear, at a bare minimum, athletic shoes to shop. There will be no
open toed shoes, slides, or crocs worn in the shop.
Students will be responsible for intentionally damaged tools and equipment.
Students must wear approved safety glasses while in the shop.
Students will not take out a cell phone at any time in the shop unless expressly
authorized by the instructor.
Students must wear ear protection while machines are in use.
Evaluation:
Students will be graded daily on their “Shop Work”. This grade will be based on their
mastery of the skill being taught as well as the amount of effort put forth.
Shop Work—-----80% of grade
Tests & Quizzes–20% of grade
Class Policies:
There will be no cell phone use without permission.
There will be no eating in the shop.
There will be no drinking of any beverage other than water in the shop.
