1. Traditional Literacy
“The traditional literacy skill set certain the traditional literacies of reading,
writing, speaking, and listening “.
Traditional definitions of literacy usually refer to the ability to read and
write. These are skills that can be developed over time, and they should
be practiced regularly.
More than just knowing how to read and write basic letters and sentences
(although this is a great start), this literacy means that you can understand
and communicate what you have read and that you can express yourself
through writing.
2. Functional Literacy
Functional Literacy is the ability to apply the knowledge gained to
functional purposes. This skill is not normally measures objectively. This is
the application pf the skills in real-life situations or are applied for
sustainability. Functional Literacy have been identified into several kinds.
The following are some of the many kinds of literacy which are deemed
important in life.
a) Media Literacy
b) Religious Literacy
c) Financial Literacy
d) Computer/Cyber/Digital Literacy
e) Eco Literacy
f) Legal Literacy
g) Arts Literacy
h) Social Literacy
Functional Literacy may be defined as the ability to comprehend and use
communication media (Bereite and Scardamalia 2005). It refers to the set
of skills of searching, using, adapting, creating and reflectively understand
multimodal information for communication and action in daily life
(Rosenblatt 1995, 2005).
Functional Literacy refers to personal reflection on what textual and visual
environments are presuming.
In 1978, UNESCO General Conference adopted a definition of functional
literacy – still in use today – which in all those activities in which literacy is
required for effective function of his group and community and also for
enabling him to continue to use reading, writing and calculation for his own
and the communities development.
3. Emergent Literacy
Marie Clay (1996) was the first one who used the term emergent literacy
Emergent Literacy is often related with reading. These are skills which begin
to appear from birth to childhood which signals their readings to learning how
to read.
To better catch and further enhance the skills as it begins to blossom, adults
should be keen enough in observing these from children. Whenever these
skills become evident, adults should present more opportunities to for the
child for further enhancement. These skills when mastered, can eventually
lead to developing beginning reading skills.
Emergent Literacy encompasses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that a
child develop in relation to reading and writing throughout the early childhood
period, starting at birth and before the onset of conventional reading and
writing instruction (usually at school entry). Emergent Literacy includes such
aspects as oral language (both speaking and listening), understanding that
print can carry meaning, as well as basic alphabet knowledge, and early
phonological awareness.
4. Basic Literacy and Skills
Basic Literacy skills is one of the four classifications of literacy which are
result of the functional literacy assessment created by the National
Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL). The classifications are as follows:
a) Below Basic Literacy – reading and writing words and numbers in
very simple documents. (ex. Identifying basic symbols from a chart or
map; signing forms; adding monetary amounts when depositing in a
bank).
b) Basic Literacy – performing simple skills to understand short texts
(Ex. Reading a brochure or graphic ad; understanding a basic manual
or guide; comparing prices when purchasing).
c) Intermediate Literacy – performing challenging skills to understand
long texts. (Ex. Looking up information in a reference book;
summarizing a long article; placing an order and calculating the cost).
d) Proficient Literacy – performing creative and critical thinking skills to
understand texts.(Ex. Screening news article – fake vs real; interpreting
statistical reports; comparing food items coordinating to cost by
computing per ounce or grams).
