WHAT IS TECHNICAL DRAWING?
The technical drawing has also been defined as the system of graphic representation of
existing objects or prototypes, according to standards and conventions pre-established by
regulatory institutions.
This allows describing precisely and clearly the dimensions, shapes and characteristics
of these material objects
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHICAL DRAWING?
Technical drawing allows efficient communication among engineers and can be kept as a
record of the planning process.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, a technical drawing is a much more effective
tool for engineers than a written plan.
DRAWING BOARD
A drawing board is a kind of multipurpose desk which can be used for any kind of
drawing, writing or impromptu sketching on a large sheet of paper or for reading a large
format book or other oversized document or for drafting precise technical illustrations
(such as engineering drawings or architectural drawings). The drawing table used to be a
frequent companion to a pedestal desk in a study or private library, during the pre-
industrial and early industrial era. During the Industrial Revolution, draftsmanship
gradually became a specialized trade and drawing tables slowly moved out of the
libraries and offices of most gentlemen. They became more utilitarian and were built of
steel and plastic instead of fine woods and brass. More recently, engineers and draftsmen
use the drawing board for making and modifying drawings on paper with ink or pencil.
T-SQUARE
A T-square is a technical drawing instrument used by draftsmen primarily as a guide for
drawing horizontal lines on a drafting table. It may also guide a set square to draw
vertical or diagonal lines.
COMPUTER
In computer graphics we are generally concerned with images drawn on display screens.
(Hard copies can then be made of these images if needed, using various types of plotting
device.) There are several ways in which these images can be constructed and different
types of display device use a range of imaging techniques to achieve acceptable visual
representations. In modem industry, the computer supports all the design and
manufacturing functions. The concept of a common database has effectively integrated
these engineering functions and requires the engineer to be aware of the ramifications of
changes anywhere in the design and manufacturing process. The link between the area of
drawing and design and analysis is very strong. Computer aided design and drawing
systems provide the means to generate 3D models with the computer and from those
models generate drawings for manufacturing. Computer aided drawing is a technique to
produce engineering drawings with the assistance of a computer.
PRINTER
Computer printers and plotters output industrial data in printed form. They may be used
to produce precision blueprints, graphics, labels, maps, and other images. While both
industrial printers and plotters are used to reproduce visual material, their construction
and use differs in significant ways.
COMPASS
A compass, more accurately known as a pair of compasses, is a technical drawing
instrument that can be used for inscribing circles or arcs. As dividers, it can also be used
as a tool to step out distances, in particular, on maps.
FRENCH CURVES
French curves are used to draft specific patterns. They were invented in the late 1880’s
and were used by mathematicians, engineers, and sewing professionals. But technically, a
French curve is a drafting tool that’s used to connect points to a smooth curve. It can also
be used to draft garment patterns and make alterations
DRAWING PAPER
Drawing paper is used in the creation of blueprints. Some drafting paper is clear and
unpatterned, but it is also possible to purchase paper with a grid. Grid vellum and other
gridded drafting papers are useful for technical drawings, because they provide a frame of
reference for the drafter and for anyone viewing the draft.
Two types of drawing papers are:
ANS I - 22×inches (558.8 × 863.6 millimeters)
ANSI E – 34 × 44inches (863.6 × 1117.6 millimeters)
LINE TYPES
Here are some examples of the different types of lines:
