Different Kinds of Communications
❑ Point to Point Communication
❑ Point/Multipoint to Multi-point Communication
❑ Multiple User Access

Point to Point Communication
▪ Processes carry information from a place to other place satisfies 3 d
emands: Far, Fast and Accurate
▪ Far (passed away): Distance of communications (can be from Earth
to Mars). It is more and less depend on transmission Power and the
loss caused by medium
▪ Fast: Rate of communications. It is not only the speed of the light but
depend on bandwidth of channel (frequency bandwidth)
▪ Accurate: No mistake. Depend on the transmission technique, require
ment about 10-6-10-7 BER
Wireless Comm. Dept. Dinh Trieu Duong
Point to Point Communication
▪ Source data: Message → Electrical signal
▪ Transmitter: Modulation (setup information on the carrier how to fit
the channel)+ Power Amp.
▪ Receiver: PreAmp. + Demodulation → Original message data

Carrier and Mod/Demodulation
❑ The Carrier: goes as far as possible (with low loss), it alwa
ys relates to the specific medium
▪ Media: Wired, Wireless
▪ Carries: continuous wave or pulse
❑ The modulation and demodulation: Put message on and
take out of the carries
▪ Depend on carrier and media
▪ Depend on source (continuous or digital)
Wireless Comm. Dept. Dinh Trieu Duong
The carriers
❑ Sinusoidal Electromagnet wave (continuous wave)
A, f, φ can be modulated
by message
❑ Narrow pulses
Amplitude, width, spacing
can be modulated

Other issues
❑ Power and bandwidth are fundamental resources in co
mmunications. Design is required to saving the total
resource consumption
❑ To reduce communication errors need the coding
theory
❑ To effective transmission need the information theory
❑ SNR (ratio of the average signal power to the average
noise power) at receiver is a important parameter in
system design
Wireless Comm. Dept. Dinh Trieu Duong
Other issues
❑ Network communication:
The system includes many nodes, many ways and many u
sers (like as a traffic system in the city): Design not only s
atisfy to all of users but having a good performance for w
hole system
Wireless Comm. Dept. Dinh Trieu Duong
Other issues
Network switching:
❑ First, a transmission line from the source to destination is setup early
and then all information is carried on this line, this kind associate with
circuit-switching
❑ Second, information is broken into many packets, and then those
packets can be carriedd on different paths. After reaching destination
the pakets integrated into information. This kind associate with a p
acket-switching
