Division of DECIMALS

Decimals and
Mixed Decimals
Tips
To divide a decimals, write the divisor as a whole number by
moving the decimal point to the right a certain number of
times. Then move the decimal point of the dividend the
same number of times. Use 0s as placeholders when
necessary. Then divide as you would divide whole numbers.

dividend - the numbers to be divided dividend divisor quotient
divisor - the number by which the dividend is divided
Quotient - the resulting number after performing division

decimal quotient.
✅When dividing decimals by 10, 100, or 1,000
mentally, move the decimal point of the dividend to
the left, as indicated by the number of zeros in the
divisor. Use 0s as placeholders when necessary.

✅ When dividing decimals by 0.1, 1.01, or 0.001

mentally, move the decimal point of the dividend to
the right, as indicated by the number of decimal places
in the divisor. Use 0s as placeholders when necessary.
✅Quotients that are repeating, non-terminating
decimals can be written by placing a bar on top of the
repeating digit or digits.

✅ Quotients that are non repeating,

non-terminating decimals can be rounded off based on
a specified place value or number of decimal places.

Find the number obtained when the quotient of

36.48 divided by 0.01 is divided by 10.
Solution
Step 1: find the quotient of 36.48 Step 2: divide 3648 by 10
and 0.01
3648 ÷ 10 = 3648.
36.48 ÷ 0.01 = 36.48
= 364.8
= 3648

The number obtained is 364.8

1. A wooden block is 18.8 m long. A length of 3.3 m is cut from it and the remainder is divided
into 5 pieces of equal length. Find the length of each remaining piece.
Step 1: Step 2:
Subtract 3.3 m from 18.8 m. Divide 15.5 m into 5 pieces of equal length.

18.8 - 3.3 = 15.5 m 15.5 - 5 = 3.1 m

The remainder of the wooden block is 15.5 m. The length of each remaining piece is 3.1 m.
2. The total weight of 6 iron balls and 5 metal balls is 122.5 kg. Each iron ball is five times as
heavy as a metal ball. Find the difference in weight between an iron ball and a metal ball.
1 iron ball 1 iron ball 1 iron ball
5 metal balls

1 iron ball 1 iron ball 1 iron ball

122.5 kg

Total unit is 35. A Metal ball = 3.5 kg

5 metal balls
35 units = 122.5 kg An Iron ball - 3.5 x 5 = 17.5 kg.
1 unit = 122.5 ÷ 35 = 3.5 kg
Find their difference.
A Metal ball has 1 unit. 17.5 - 3.5 = 14 kg
An Iron ball has 5 units.
1 iron ball Find their difference.
The difference in their weight is 14kg.
3. A rope 2.82 m long is divided equally into 6 pieces. If two of the pieces are used to form a square, what is the
length of one side of the square? Round your answer to the nearest centimeter.
Step 1: Step 3: Step 4:
Divide 2.82 m into 6 pieces. A square has 4 sides. Divide 0.94 Convert meter to centimeter. Then
into 4 to get one side of a square. round off to the nearest centimeter.
2.82 ÷ 6 = 0.47 m
0.94 ÷ 4 = 0.235 m 1 m = 100 cm
One piece is 0.47 m. 0.235 x 100 = 23.5 cm
One side of a square is 0.235 m.
Step 2: 23.5 cm ≈ 24 cm
Use two pieces to form a
square.

0.47 x 2 = 0.94 m

Two pieces to form a square is

The length of one side is 24 cm.
0.94 m.

Answer this:
Mother bought 1.2 kg of vegetable
at ₱45.50 per kilogram and 2.5 kg
of chicken at ₱103.25 per kilogram.
How much did she pay altogether?
Solution
1.2 kg of vegetables 2.5 kg of chicken

₱45.50 per kilogram ₱103.25 per kilogram

Step1: We need to multiply the total amount for each item bought.

Step2: Then we add all the total amount of each item bought. ON
Continuation:
