Lesson Elements and

1 Compounds
Everything in this world is made up of matter. Matter is anything that occupies space
and possesses rest mass. Matter can be classified into two: Mixture and Pure
Substance. Mixture is a combination of two or more substances that can be
separated into their original components while pure substance definite composition
and the same composition throughout. A pure substance may be either an element
or a compound.

following questions below.

Elements and Compounds

Amanda Awan

You’re pure, so cool, and element

Alone and new, I’m one too.
4
When we joined together a chemical reaction,
in a flash and a smile I joined with you.

The abundance is perfect,

a new being is formed
a compound of you and me,
I'm no longer alone.

We’re as one can be together

a world where we exist,
where elements mix in unisons
a reaction in a mist.

A chemical bond,
holds me perfectly in your arms,
no longer are we unwanted
it means us no harm.

No being can separate us,

just an electrical pull,
that makes us broken
without a tool.

It zaps you like a current

and pulls you far away,
Alone in the darkness,
I'm just an element washed away.

Elements
An element is the basic form of matter that is composed of one type of atom.
It cannot be decomposed or broken down into other substances. Today, there are
118 known elements, 92 are naturally occurring in the environment while the
remaining 26 are synthetically made in laboratories.

atomic number.

Names and Symbols of Elements
In 1811, Jons Jakob Berzelius pioneered the system of
naming chemical symbols using the one- and two-letter symbols.
Symbols are assigned to elements in a different way.
 The first letter of the element is used as the symbol for the
element and it should be written in capital letters.
 If two or more elements start with the same letter, the first
and the second letters will be used for the symbol. Figure 3: Jon Jakob Berzelius

 The first letter should be written in capital letter and the second should be in
lowercase.
 Some used the first letter of the Latin or Greek name of the elements.

Hydrogen H Hydro (Greek)

Oxygen O Oxy and Genes (Greek)

Carbon C Carbo (Latin)

Chromium Cr Chroma (Greek)

Chlorine Cl Chloros (Greek)

Silver Ag Argentum (Latin)

Sodium Na Natrium (Latin)

Potassium K Kalium (Latin)

Compounds
A compound is a form of matter that is consist of 2 or more different atoms
joined by a process known as chemical bond . Unlike element, compound can be
decomposed or broken down into simpleir substance through chemical reation
