秋田犬 part 6
A very large dog played an important role along with the crossbreeding (presumably a mastiff) played ,
owned by a German Mining engineer one around 1868 who stayed at the copper mine of Ani, North
Akita.
There is also another very large dog (probably a st Bernard crossing), that Kenkichi Mogami from
Kadomagawamachi in South Akita had acquired abroad in 1904. Before the arrival of Mr. Mogami's dog
also a group of the dog fighting club from Tosa (Shikoku) in the city of Odate paid a visit. In any case, dog
fighting gained increasing popularity after like previously mentioned, their exclusive character in favor of
publicly organized events.
In 1899 an Enyukai (literally "garden festival") Dog fighting organization was founded. An arena was built
in Shintomi-cho and entrance fees were 5 sen for adults and 3 sen for children. In the best of times up to
100 dogs performed and competition programs were distributed.
The dog fight fever in Odate was fueled by the competition with the fighting dogs from Tosa. In 1901 a
group of the Tosa Fighting Dog Club toured through western Japan, Kansai Kanto. She also came to Odate
towards the end of the year and held fights there against Odate-Inu. The larger and heavier Odate-Inu
are said to have had an advantage.
Because of its relationship to the Akita-Inu, I would like to briefly add something to the origin of the Tosa
attack dog. It is said that the Tosa attack dog is not a dog that has lived in Japan since ancient times, but
started in the Meiji period by crossing Tosa-Inu from Shikoku with foreign ones. Dogs arose with the aim
of creating a strong breed for dog fighting.
The following dogs are said to have been used for crossbreeding: a sharp dog out Nagasaki (around
1850), then the bulldog one around 1870 in Kochi (Shikoku) from an English teaching British, the mastiff
of a German doctor around 1873, a Boston Terrier, a Bull Terrier, and a Saint Bernard.
During the Taisho period (1912-1925) a Mr. Kyono from South Akita imported a Great Dane from
Germany. It was owned by Mr Matsunaga along with mastiffs from Tokyo and Mr. Oohara from Okayama
Prefecture used for the crossbreeding, which resulted in excellent Tosa attack dogs.

In the first year of Kaei, a person named Otaka Haneki of Kosaka High in Tosa County brought back a
fierce dog from Nagasaki who was named the best in the area at the time,
This was crossed with a conventional Tosa dog, and three sire were born in September of Ansei, and
named `` Sakai no Hiko '', `` Daiganji no Hatsu '', `` Inagi Buchi ''. Both were famous at the time, and this
was the ancestor of the current Tosa dog. At the time, the bulldog was probably the strongest Western
dog. At the beginning of the Meiji era, British pointers and British setters were imported and crossed. At
that time, Itagaki Shusuke imported a bulldog, which was bred to each mongrel dog. This is the ancestor
of Tosa fighting dogs today.
Bull Terrier of Mitsubishi Zaibatsu. Yataro Iwasaki (1834-1885)
Honey, a Boston bull. In 1870, an English instructor of the Kochi clan, Meyer, had a dog called Honey, a
Boston Bull.
Mastiff: The Dutch who landed in Nagasaki during the Tenmei era (1781-1789)
Mastiff 1873 (1893) A physician from Germany who visits a hospital in Gochiyama, , Kochi
2 Great Danes 1923 Kyono Hyōuemon in Akita Female import from Germany, Gamma and Brikka
Mastiff: Mr. Sonaburo Ohara (July 28, 1880-January 18, 1943)
When those dogs and Japanese dogs were made to fight, the Japanese dogs were enthusiastic. It was
enough, but the Japanese dog had poor endurance and was small in size. However, once the foreign dog
bite his oppponent, it did not let go and did not make a vocalization. Therefore, while retaining the spirit
of the native dog, we mate an excellent breed of dog in terms of physique. As a result, the standing ears
came to hang down and the curly tail was drooping. This is the beginning of the modern Tosa dog. In the
Taisho era, instead of redheads as Tosa's are today, white-based brown and black spots was used for
fighting dogs. However, blood and injuries are noticeable. It was copulated so that it gradually became a
redhead. The pointer was also described as being crossed because of its high athletic ability. When you
use the pointer, you can see that your athletic ability is high. The fact that the foreigner who came to
Japan brought the Pointer dog who was larger than the dog used as a traditional fighting dog, Perhaps
the biggest reason for mating was that they were stiff when they tried to fight. After crossing the pointer
and the Tosa dog, there was a statement that the dog had became bigger and had larger ears.
