BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
This part of feasibility presented the introduction, background
information and objectives of the study as well as the limitations and
scope.
Introduction
A lot of People chose food products that have a less healthy
nutritional content. People nowadays wanted artificial made food product
more than the natural one and it’s never been good for their health. “The
essential for good health is an outweighing factor in the selection of
nutritionally adequate diet, and it doesn’t only just affect the physical body
of an individual but also the mental and social wellbeing” Ramona Borro,
Gemora et. al. Appropriate nourishment is needed and good nutrition is
one of the keys in having a healthy life.
Of the 11.2 million children under 5 years of age in the
Philippines, approximately 3.7 million (34%) are stunted. These
undernourished children have an increased risk of mortality, illness and
infections, delayed development, cognitive deficits, poorer school
performance, and fewer years in school. Malnutrition undermines human
capital and economic productivity and can limit progress in achieving at
least 6 of the 8 Millennium Development Goals and targets set by the
World Health Assembly. The researchers would like to offer a product that
would be beneficial to all, instead of using artificial products, the Bite-Sized
Vegie Cake would contain pure vegetables. It would be affordable and
budget-friendly. The study would also be for the case of malnutrition, if it
would be of help.
“Malnutrition is widespread across the Philippines. There has been
little progress in addressing under nutrition, and over nutrition has
emerged as a serious concern. This growing double burden hinders the
country’s potential for social and economic development.” Malnutrition is
also one of the problems in the Philippines, not all Filipino can afford to eat
at least 3 times a day. Furthermore, other products increase a lot in
prices; however there are still products that are quite affordable like breads
in the bakery. Filipino really loves breads and pastries, young and old
alike, and in a typical bakery shop pandesal, monay, ensaymada are often
sold.
Baked products are not only rich in calories but also in protein, fats,
minerals, and vitamins. Since they do not contain much cooking oil, baked
products are digestible.
According to research, the early Egyptians were the first to show
evidence of advanced baking skills, they made cakes using in a leavened
dough sweetened with honey and flavoured with spices. In ancient Rome,
basic bread dough was sometimes enriched with butter, eggs, and honey,
which produced a sweet and cake-like baked good.
It is thought that the first ever reference to ‘‘a cake to be baked in
small cups’’, rather than as a layer cake, was in Amelia Simmons’’
‘‘American Cookery’’ in 1796. The first reference to the word ‘cupcake’ is
said to be from a 19th century American author named Eliza Leslie in her
cookbook ‘Receipts’. Cupcakes are simple and easy to make, they are
easy to eat, looks cute, and it can be decorated as well, it can be in any
different flavors like an ordinary cake. Enhancing the nutritional value of a
cupcake, like adding vegetables in it might be interesting for the
consumers.
Vegetables has so much nutrients to offer, one of the ingredients that
the researcher wanted to use for the Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes was carrots,
Carrots are available all year round and can be used in savory dishes,
cakes, and juices. Carrots are also rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Carrots contain vitamin C, an antioxidant. This helps boost the immune
system and prevent disease. In addition, the mashed potato would be
added as one of the ingredients in the product that would be offered.
Mashed Potatoes are low in fat, high in potassium and only have 150
calories per potato/serving.
Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes can be available in any season since other
vegetables can be used as an option. The Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes are
more like a cupcake or same size as a macaroon. People nowadays use
cupcakes displays rather than the traditional cakes, cupcakes being
miniature cakes are becoming extremely popular. Cupcakes are not just
made for kids, but also for the adults or maybe even seniors. The objective
of this research is to give a product that would be well-liked by everyone,
at the same time a product that contains enough nutrients an individual
needs.
Background Information
The researchers decided to offer two types of this product; first
would be a cake that contains more sugar, if it would be more sweeter the
younger ones would enjoy it. Second would be a cupcake that has a less
sugar level, this would be offered to the adults or elders, this product
would be safe for their health. The product that we would offer would also
be beneficial, it would promote ways on how to have a healthy life style.
The bite size veggie cake is made in purity to assure that the ingredient in
baking veggie cake are in the right measurement to take the right flavor
and taste. The final product should satisfy the consumer.
The main purpose of this study is to determine if the younger ones
would appreciate the use of vegetables in sweets and for the elders to be
able to enjoy this kinds of product without harming their health. This
product is not just an ordinary snack or dessert, it would also give health
benefits to consumer. Since the product consists of vegetables, it contains
more nutrients than any ordinary cupcakes out there.
In regards with the location and stall, the cleanliness of the
stall shall be a priority as well, cleanliness should be maintained to secure
that the products that would be served are clean. Proper waste disposal
should be applied in order to keep the workplace clean.
Objectives of the Study
To offer a product to the Elders, that is nutritious and safe for their health
as well.
To encourage them to eat vegetables using sweets, not only the younger
ones, but also those people who doesn’t appreciate vegetables.
To offer a product that is quite unique and new to the consumers.
To offer a product that is affordable and budget-friendly sweets.
To give the consumer a product that would reach their satisfaction and a
joyful feeling
Significance of the study
The researchers wanted to offer a product to the consumers that is
affordable or has a cheaper price but excels in quality and taste. A
delicacy that contains a lot of nutrients rather than any ordinary snacks.
The Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes focuses more on the health of the consumers.
Business Industry- This product would also be beneficial for the business
industry since it would be recognized by the people or consumer.
Vendors- This study will be very beneficial to the vendors, those who sells
vegetable in particular, since their products won’t be only used in dishes,
but it would be recognized as well.
Consumer- The consumer are highly the one that would benefit the most,
because they would be the one who would receive the nutrients the
product would offer.
Elders- The researchers would like to offer two types of Bite-Sized Vegie
Cakes, one of the product has a lesser sugar and it’s not only for the
elders but also for those consumer who hate too much sweets, as a result
the product might reach their satisfaction and they would enjoy each bite.
Parents- This research product benefits the parents of the childrens
whose going to consume this Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes . The parents would
be aware, that, their children are receiving enough nutrients from the food
that they are consuming.
Scope and Limitations
The study focused on the development of Bite-Sized Vegie Cakes
using affordable vegetables as its main ingredients, which are available in
any part of the Philippines country. Acceptability of the products developed
was determined by conducting consumer survey with Senior High School
students of the Binangonan Catholic College in Binangonan Rizal. The
researchers would give a proper service and ensure the safety of the
consumers.
Definition of Terms
Consumers- are people or organizations that purchase products or
services.
Vendor- or a supplier, is a supply chain management term that means
anyone who provides goods or services to another entity.
Outweigh- be greater or more significant than.
Malnutrition- is a condition that results from nutrient deficiency or
overconsumption.
Antioxidant- a substance that inhibits oxidation, especially one used to
counteract the deterioration of stored food products.
Potassium- is a mineral and an electrolyte. It helps your muscles work,
including the muscles that control your heartbeat and breathing.
Nutritional value- refers to contents of food and the impact of constituents
on body. It relates to carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, additives,
enzymes, vitamins, sugar intake, cholesterol, fat.
