Sheet 1

1. For the hydraulic circuit shown in Error! Reference source not found. and from the information given,
calculate the following parameters:
1. Extending speed, 2. Retracting speed, 3. Pressure required to lift the load.
4. Flow from the rod end (annulus area) of the cylinder while extending.
5. Pump output power during load extension.

2. Label the different components of the shown

circuits. Determine the pump size (Q, H and
shaft power) knowing that clamping thrust 120 KN,
hydraulic cylinder has piston size 100 mm and rod
70 mm, speed of forward stroke 3 m/min,
Cylinder load during this stroke 5 KN,
Intensifier has diameter ratio 5: 1 and pump
efficiency 85%, Assume no leakage and allow
pressure drop 0.3 bar in DCV and piping.

3. In the hydraulic circuit in Figure, the directly operated counterbalance valve is set at 40 bar. What does
the gage read when the platen is not moving and is being suspended in mid-stroke? What does the
gage read when the platen is approaching the material to be pressed? Assume that the system relief
valve is set for 70 bar and that the movement of the cylinder rod is severely restricted once the platen
contacts the material to be crushed. What is the maximum pressing force if the platen moves through
the material during the pressing operation?
4. Label the different components of the shown circuits. Then describe the function of this circuit.
Finally, for the given data [ 10 cm bore diameter, 2.5 cm rod diameter, pump pressure 100 bar and
flowrate 10 L/min] for the neutral position; Does the cylinder extend or retract? Find the net force and
velocity of the cylinder.

Sheet 3

1. A special machine is used to emboss

graphic symbols on metal foil. The foil

is fed through the embossing

machine. The advanced motion of the

stamp must be capable of being varied

in accordance with the fed speed as

shown in the Figure. The return

motion must always be executed as a

rapid traverse. A One-way flow control

valve is used to control the speed of

the stamp, while a pressure relief valve is used to prevent the weight of the stamp from pulling the

piston rod out of the cylinder. A 4/2-way valve is used to switch between advance and return motion.

Draw the hydraulic circuit diagram by choosing the correct components according to the machine

function and above explanation.

2. Two similar double acting hydraulic

cylinders are used to push product

from a vertical stack into a conveyor

belt then into a container as shown

in the Figure. Draw the hydraulic

circuit that will continuously

remove product from the stack and

fulfill the following requirements:

● In the active stroke, Cylinder A has to move first. Cylinder B starts to move with normal speed only

when Cylinder A reaches the end of its travel.

● The extending speed of Cylinder B should be 70% of that of Cylinder A.

● Both cylinders should be able to retract together at the same time. The pressure needed for Cylinder A

to retract is 20 bar and that for Cylinder B is 10 bar.

● Conveyor belt has two actuators both of them should be able to rotate together at the same time.

● Install a filter in the suction line. This filter may be blocked with oil contamination at any instant during

operation.

● Install a safety circuit to prevent damage to system and injury to operating and maintenance

personnel.

3. A press for formation of sheet iron to U shape ( ‫ مكبس تشكيل صاج علي شكل حرف‬U) consists of three
hydraulic cylinders A, B, and C. actuator A extends and clamps the sheet. Actuators B.C extend
simultaneously to shape the sheet. Draw the hydraulic circuit that fulfill the following requirements:

● Single acting spring return cylinders

● Cylinders B, C extent and retract together at the same time
● Cylinder A extend first and clamp at a pressure of 35 bar.
● Cylinder A retract after the retraction of cylinders B, C.
● Install a filter in the suction line. This filter may be blocked with oil contamination at any instant
during operation.

● Control speed of A Cylinder using Meter-in flow control valve.

4. The diagram shows an outline design for a proposed machine to be used for drilling a hole in a work

piece. First, the work piece is put in position. Next, the work piece is clamped by C Cylinder. After that,

the hydraulic motor starts rotating. Finally, the work piece is fed against the drill by Cylinder B and the

drilling starts. Cylinder B is double rod type with the rod fixed at each end.

Draw the hydraulic circuit that fulfill the following requirements:

● Hydraulic motor A has to have fixed torque and speed.

● In the active stroke, Cylinder C has to move first, then motor A start to rotates only when
Cylinder C reaches the end of its travel. Finally, Cylinder B starts to move.
● The feed of Cylinder B must be controlled.
● In retraction: Cylinder B has to move first, then motor A stops, finally, cylinder C start to retract.
● Install a filter in the suction line. This filter may be blocked with oil contamination at any instant
during operation.
