Science of the Secondary 12 – Bin

Atelier Hoko 2022 ISBN 9789811821264 Acqn 32605
Pb 17x25cm 60pp col ills £19.75

To remove their rubbish, human beings have long since relied on the bin: they fill it up with all
sorts of garbage and when it is more or less full and the stench becomes unbearable, one
unfortunate individual will have the dreaded task of emptying it. It is curious, however, that in
parts of the world untouched by man, bins are neither seen nor heard of and before our minds
start conjuring scenes of animals burning their own garbage every night, a better explanation
would be that the concept of rubbish simply do not exist in nature and therefore...no bin!

Science of the Secondary 13 – Rubbish

Atelier Hoko 2022 ISBN 9789811821271 Acqn 32606
Pb 18x25cm 48pp col ills £19.75

It is true that the pleasures of consumption has always been accompanied by the burdens of
rubbish. This can be considered a modern problem facing human beings today. Rubbish is
integral and almost inseparable from the basic functions of our everyday. From the moment we
reach out for a piece of tissue to the yearly ritual of unwrapping gifts, we produce rubbish so
effortlessly (and sometimes unknowingly) Yet, neither its near infinite variety of forms nor its
ambiguous definition reflect the near-universal approaches we have all adapted towards the
handling of rubbish_

Goth - Designing Darkness

Design Museum Den Bosch 2022 ISBN 9789083210100 Acqn 32620
Pb 21x28cm 256pp col ills £31.50

The Enlightenment heralded reason and progress, yet also spawned a world organised along
increasingly rigid lines of technological development and economic gain. In the late 18th century,
this "disenchantment" with the world triggered a reaction, a counter-movement and antidote to
notions of progress, clarity, and globalisation. The goth subculture as we know it today was born
in the 1980s, but its roots are much older. It is a lifestyle steeped in an undefined yearning for the
dark side of life, deeply rooted in our material culture and especially omnipresent in our ways of
looking and understanding. This book seeks the essence of goth by exploring and crossing its
outer limits.

The Most Beautiful Swiss Books 2021 - The Editor's issue

Bundesamt Fur Kultur 2022 ISBN 9783909928804 Acqn 32629
Pb 21x29cm 352pp col ills £31

There is no shortage of explanations as to what exactly makes a beautiful book. Over the years,
the criteria have also changed with the times. And although parameters change, it is still all about
finding the right form for the content. For the 2021 edition of 'The Most Beautiful Swiss Books',
the jury was handed more than 400 volumes to consider. In the end, only 23 of these would be
selected to receive the accolade. Designed by Aude Lehmann, this publication recounts the
deliberations, logistics, expected and unforeseen obstacles, and finally the award-winning titles
themselves. Six interviews with various professionals involved in the books' production are also
included.

The City Is Ours #2 - Graffiti Removals

Other Editions 2022 ISBN 9789526878461 Acqn 32632
Pb 15x22cm 96pp col ills £24.75

The second edition in a series of six "bookzines" that invite you to explore your surroundings with
a more curious gaze. Each is dedicated to a single theme relating to a street-level detail, proving
that anything can be more interesting and meaningful than what it seems to be. Graffiti is
considered to be any kind of unauthorised expression written on walls. Such unsanctioned throw-
ups, tags, slogans, and random scribbling will likely be covered over eventually. And because it is
not always possible to match the wall's original colour, these covered-up paintings become
another kind of wall painting. Dive into an analysis of colour, typology, tolerance, collaboration,
and much more.

Playgrounding, the Playground as a Symbolic Form of Society and Design Culture

Corraini Edizioni 2022 ISBN 9791254930014 Acqn 32657
Hb 21x25cm 160pp col ills £52

Talking about playgrounds means telling stories about the definition of urban space, creativity,
contestation, and reflections on the culture of childhood. After all, the playground is a symbolic
form linked with the anthropological heart of our social relations. Researched by curator and
design historian Domitilla Dardi, this book opens with a visual history of playgrounds, an overview
of projects by artists, designers, and architects who have taken on the challenge of creating
playgrounds over time. Creators were also asked to imagine new playgrounds for the book,
leading to nine proposals from Paul Cox, Konstantin Grcic, Studio Ossidiana, Olimpia Zagnoli,
and others.

Soft propaganda, special relationships and a new democracy. Adprint and Isotype 1942-
1948
De Buitenkant Publishers 2022 ISBN 9789076452005 Acqn 32659
Pb 17x24cm 208pp col ills £38.95

Originally from Vienna, Otto Neurath (1882-1945) can be seen as the godfather of today's
infographics. An innovator in museum practice, he also invented the Isotype method of pictorial
statistics in close collaboration with Marie Reidemeister, with whom he fled the rise of Nazism,
eventually landing in England. Through fellow emigre Wolfgang Foges and his book packaging
firm Adprint, they were commissioned to design Isotype charts for printed matter supported by the
UK Ministry of Information during the war. This book illustrates around 150 Isotypes from these
publications and provides in-depth information about their production and remarkable quality
during wartime.

Inventario 16 - Everything is a Project

Corraini Edizioni 2022 ISBN 9788875709983 Acqn 32691
Pb 21x27cm 160pp col ills £13.50

The matches on the cover can be thought of as inflammatory bodies, sparks and matter that flare,
smoulder, and devour themselves. They are objects with a common destiny: to shine for a
moment, only to hastily vanish. It follows that objects and artworks inspired by matches are the
first things featured in this edition, segueing into a brief survey of Noma Bar's clever, deceptively
simple illustrations. Continuing, explore the destabilising properties of the colour pink, learn about
Mel Bochner's conceptual artwork 'Theory of Painting', wade into the enigmatic photography of
Todd Hido, check out different architectural elevations (literally), and wonder at Massimo
Gardone's chromatic herbaria.

Pb 11x17cm 48pp col ills £11.95

'Fieldguides for a Preternaturalist' is a series of small chapbooks designed to bring collaborators,

audiences, and readers together as part of the project 'Nothing of Importance Occurred:
Recuperating a Herball for a 17th-Century Enslaved Angolan Midwife at the Cape', initiated by
South African artist Wendy Morris. Through speculative investigations of plants-as-archive and
storytelling-as-method, the project focuses on retrieving a library of botanical-medicinal
knowledge that perhaps informed Morris's enslaved ancestor. The 'Fieldguides' invite
collaborators to shed light on this from multiple angles. The first edition features South African
storyteller and author Nadia Kamies.

Raddar 4 - Faux / Fake

T&P Publishing, Mudac 2022 ISBN 9791095513155 Acqn 32700
Pb 20x25cm 240pp col ills £37.25

Underpinning this edition of 'Raddar' is a contemplation of design and the consequences of the
will and power of creation. Design has long played with the notions or variations of fake -
questions of falsification, touching on issues of manipulation and broader social concerns. All the
articles are written by designers or researchers for whom the concept of fake had to be re-
invoked. This is because the increasingly ambiguous link between our societies with deceptive
techniques, reconstructions, post-truths, alternative facts, fact-checking, etc., necessarily
repositions their practices in new relationships with the tools, projects, or observations of the
realms where they act and operate.

Stefano Calligaro – Poetricks

Edition Taube 2022 ISBN 9783945900574 Acqn 32702
Pb 9x13cm 208pp ills £16.50

Stefano Calligaro presents a selection of his ongoing work of literal "poetical-tricks" consisting of
modified words and common terms, silly but clever verbal glitches that challenge established
social and cultural codes through visual simplicity and a precise but deliberate (mis)use of
language. The series originated with the aim of becoming a "visual ecology of signs and
meanings", in contrast to the hyper-spectacle often seen in art and culture in general today.
"Poetricks" are simultaneously artworks, minimal poems, and tools the artist uses to question and
redefine the essence, meaning, and boundaries of art, language, and poetry.

Viaindustriae 2022 ISBN 9788897753766 Acqn 32713
Pb 14x22cm 208pp col ills £21.50

Starting in the mid-1990s, Active Worlds remained the most popular user-created virtual
environment on the internet for a full decade. Brimming with precedent and potential, this online
zone was a worldbuilding exercise and infrastructure that held the promise of a self-electing
global citizenry amidst a virtual construction of their own imagination and creation. Architects
Andrea Belosi and Joana Rafael embarked on an expedition through the remains of its principle
territory, AlphaWorld. Four avatars were enlisted to walk several hundred digital kilometres
across the entire world in relay, exploring the ruins of our recent digital past in order to gain
insights into our hybrid present.
