Discrimination Issues in the Philippines

The hosts discuss discrimination in the Philippines. Discrimination is unfair treatment based on characteristics like race, gender or disability. It can mentally hurt people. They analyze discrimination through different ethical frameworks. Utilitarianism could allow discrimination if it benefits the majority, but natural law and deontology say it is wrong to hurt others. Discrimination violates equality and natural human dignity. While laws prohibit workplace discrimination, it remains a problem in Philippines society.

Good day everyone!

I am JIM ROSS DELOS REYES and I am MARY LUZ BORINAGA. And welcome to "JUDGEMENT OF THE
ISSUES".

For today, we're going to talk about social issues in the Philippines that is very alarming nowadays.
And we will be focusing on 1 issue for today. And that is the “DISCRIMINATION”

So we had heard a lot of things about discrimination and we all know that this issue is an alarming
issue nowadays because it can hurt someone. Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of
people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age or sexual orientation.

If someone discriminates in order to satisfy some other person's wishes, it is also discrimination. An
example of this is a landlord who refuses to allow a person with a certain disability to rent an
apartment because the other tenants do not want to have a neighbor with that disability.

When we hear the word "discriminate" we conclude it directly as an immoral doing because
discriminating against someone is not a good thing. Some people wonder why a certain person
commits certain discrimination knowing that there is a certain consequence if he/she gets caught.

So stay still because later on, we will know more about the different judgments of ethical principles in
certain actions.

Okay, discrimination is a moral or immoral principle? What do you think, partner?

I can say discrimination is immoral, partner it is also based on the ethical origin that discrimination is
morally wrong and a violation of the principle of equality. It is an immoral issue because by
discriminating against someone, you hurt that someone, like for example when Ai refuses to talk to
her crush, Regan because she sees Regan as a hugawan, lagom and naughty man. She doesn’t want to
talk to someone who is dirty. And just because she thinks Regan is dirty or someone who is not neat
and clean, then she lost her kagustuhan nga makasturya si Regan even if Regan is her crush. And
nacrush siya anang tawhana because Regan is smart or intelligent and active sa class just like her.

And why is it sort of a discrimination, partner?

Because abi hugaw or lagom or the skin of that certain person is not as white as yours, doesn’t mean
wala nasad siyay rights to talk, partner. We all have our freedom baya to talk or communicate to
someone unya sa gibuhat ni Ai nga wala siya nagig sturya kay hugaw or lagom, she is discriminating
Regan.

Anyway patner, illegal mana ang pag discriminate sa?

Yes partner illegal na, there are laws about discrimination. Sa Federal law partner, nagprohibit siya sa
discrimination based on a person's national origin, race, color, religion, disability, sex, and familial
status. Laws prohibiting national origin discrimination make it illegal to discriminate because of a
person's birthplace, ancestry, culture or language. And partner, illegal man jud na basta makapasakit
ka ug taw, it is against the law nga makapasakit kas taw.
Hinoon sad partner. There are so many cases sa "discrimination" here in the Philippines naay uban
kay ang ilahang pag discriminate is makapatay na ug taw like ug mahurt ang usa ka taw ma stress,
depress and that leads to anxiety. Niya natubag naman to nakong pangutana na immoral siya so -
With that, we have different ethical principles that serves as our basis in rightness and wrongness in
the certain action. The Utilitarianism, Natural Law , and Deontology. Naa kay mashare diha partner?

Sige partner sa utilitarianism.

In Utilitarianism, we look out for the reason that produces good. Bisan pa unsa ka bad ang action kay
diri sa UTILITARIANISM, it is determine by its usefulness as long as it benefit many people.

(Let's think of a situation nga anhi sa Pilipinas.)

There is a family wherein they had all the things they need. They can buy anything they want to buy.
One time Mrs. Cueva who is a captain in their barangay got a disease that is dali ra makatakod so the
family made a rule to not let the other people come inside in their house if that someone is not as rich
as them because they believe nga ang taw nga pobre dili angay sa balay nga pangdato and hugaw sad
basin mosamot ang sakit sa ilang mama. They let someone enter the house if that someone is as rich
as them kay makabayad raman sila ug bisag unsa ray mahitabo and para nila mas healthy ang mga
dato.

- So In the eyes of Utilitarianism, discriminating sa poor people is somewhat right, kay the person
discriminates the poor people. Ang reason man sa family kay to protect their mom and protecting
their maam is the common happiness of the family.

With this in utilitarianism, we can say that the action is MORAL. It produce pleasure for the many. Kay
ug nay something bad mahitabo sa captain, maunsa nalang ang barangay? maybe the captain is very
kind and the family of mrs. Cueva is naguol sad para sa mga taw? That is what is I think discrimination
in utilitarianism partner, nga ang kalipay sa kadaghanan ang ilang gi value bisan nadiscrimnate nila
ang mga pobre nga taw sa ilang barangay, still nakakuan man kay if mawala ang kapitan diba?

In contradiction to Natural Law.

Natural Law is a built in knowledge, wherein we are born with this para maka realize nata daan sa
sakto og wrong. It is an ethical and philosophical theory nga it propose nga ang isa ka taw sa paghimo
sa ginoo naa na siyay knowledge daan kung unsay right and wrong wala siya tudloe sa culture or
religion.

And in the case of discrimination, it is a natural law kibaw naman ta daan nga ang pagpanaway or
pagdiscriminate ug usa ka taw is an unethical doing kay it can hurt someone mentally. There is no
need to have specific rules for us to guide our daily activities and in discrimination pero para nako
partner dapat jud ni siya e kuan sad sa [Link] why discriminate even kibaw man ta nga makapasakit
nas taw? According to the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: Makes it illegal to discriminate
against someone on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or sex. This law also protects
employees against retaliation for going forward with a claim regarding discrimination in the
workplace.

How about in deontology partner? How can we relate the discrimination to this?
The moral theory that evaluates actions that are done because of duty. So for example partner, a
worker who worked for a company for over 8 years kay natangtang sa trabaho because of major
reasons. Meanwhile nay bag o gikuha ang company para ilis atong giwa nga worker. The old worker
look at the new one and he can tell from the position of the worker nga dili bagay sa trabaho ang
katong bag o nga gikuha kay by the looks of it kay murag di pang professional ang iyang galaw. So he
planned to say what he thinks about the new worker. So the question is:

Is there a right for the old worker to discriminate the new one so that dili matanggap ang new?

What do you think partner?

Ah no partner because as what we have said ganiha, discrimination is morally wrong.

Yes partner sakto ka diha dapit. Now let us relate this to our topic about deontology e formulate nato
ang MAxIM ani then let us test our formulated maxim for universalizability.

Now the maxim here is : kaning he planned to say what he thinks about the new worker para dili
matanggap.

While the universalizability here is : moral ba nga imong e discriminate ang uban para lang di
matanggap na ipuli sa imo?kay nawad an ka ug trabaho?

No partner, it is immoral kay sa kana pa gani nga nagplano pa siya nga siraan ang new worker , to
discriminate the new worker wrong na siya partner. Kay sa kato nga ay sa old worker kay what if
mutuo ang tag iya or ang manager sa company ? edi dili na noon madayon ug kadawat sa trabaho ang
bag o. the old worker judge the new worker directly even if wala pa kay siya kaila sa new. Gi
discriminate na niya.

Yes partner, sakto jud ka diha ako partner personally para nako discrimination is never morally correct
bisan pag maka benefit kas imong pagbuhat ana.

Mao jud partner. Discrimination is a form of action that can heart someone mentally.

So that is our judgment on this issue. I think we shared a lot of examples and give reasons for our
given situations as to why nahimo na siyang inana. We based it from the rightness and wrongness of
every action. I hope sad that we make the listeners understand what we are talking about here today.

We hope guys that we help you even in small ways in your subject ethics. This is our opinion about the
topic we talked about. This is our school project because we are also students.

Thank you for letting us share our judgments. Also, partner thank you sad for sharing your knowledge
about this.

Yes thank you sad partner

So for now we are going to end this video podcast and leave you with a quote “Beauty is a
manifestation of secret natural laws, which otherwise would have been hidden from us forever”

Also partner according to Kant “We are not rich by what we possess but by what we can do without.”
“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a
man by his treatment of animals.”

Napa ka diha?

Wala na partner

So this ends our video podcast we really hope we shared our judgments clearly. This has been
JIMROSS DELOS REYES and this MARY LUZ BORINAGA.
