AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2
Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 About AVEVA Bocad Steel™

AVEVA Bocad Steel™ release 3.2 is a major update from AVEVA Bocad Structural
Detailing™ release 3.1. Many of the associated products have also been enhanced.

1.2 About this Bulletin

This user bulletin gives an overview of changes made to the software since the previous
major release: AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing™ release 3.1. It is aimed primarily at
users upgrading from that release; those upgrading from earlier releases should also read
the AVEVA Bocad Structural Detailing release 3.1 user bulletin.
This bulletin also covers many of the associated products supplied on the same DVD-R.
These products fall into 3 categories:
• Steel,
• Offshore
and these groupings are reflected in this document. Those aspects that are common
between most of the products are generally covered in the first part of the document (up to
and including General Functionality).
Significant changes to this document introduced are indicated thus: *3.2. Fix2*

1.3 Software Distribution and Installation

AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 is supplied as download, which self-installs using standard
Microsoft installation procedures. The full software suite is usually loaded onto individual
PCs running Windows, with the license server and files loaded onto a networked Windows
server.

Important: This release requires AVEVA Licensing System (ALS) and an appropriate
license; it will not work with FlexMan.
AVEVA Licensing must be downloaded from the AVEVA web-site, too. For
further details of AVEVA Licensing releases, please see:

[Link]

Important: The installers use standard Microsoft Installer (MSI) technology, which
facilitates silent installations through standard MSI means. They are usually
triggered by use of a [Link] file.

Existing installations can be de-installed during the installation process. This ensures that a
consistent product set, as tested by AVEVA, is deployed.
Fix releases (patches) use a standard updating process, which also checks, and if
necessary cleans up the existing installation. There is therefore no prompt for location, as
the system already has this information. Fix releases may also be removed using Add or

Introduction

Remove Programs. Fix releases are applied to all products installed together, not to the
individual products. The use of the latest fix release is recommended: this includes any
previous fixes to products installed together.
Installations using [Link] will install to C:\AVEVA\Bocad\3.2 by default. The
individual .msi files will use the drive with most free space by default.

Note: It is not recommended that any combination of AVEVA products are installed in the
same folder because AVEVA does not guarantee runtime compatibility between
Separate Products on different release cycles, and the un-install of one of them
subsequently damaging the other.

For further details, please refer to the AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 Installation Guide. This is
accessible from AVEVA Website at
[Link]
and found within the AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 release folder.

1.4 AVEVA Bocad Steel™ Licences

AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 does not use different desktop icons for the different licenses any
longer. The program base now is AVEVA Bocad Steel™. Available add-on’s can be loaded
additionally before job runtime. Refer to Load Add-On Products for further information.
For AVEVA Bocad Steel™ following add-on is available:
• Offshore
The add-on licence must be installed on licence server. Refer to Install Add-On License on
License Server for further information.
If an add-on is activated, an additional ribbon in the user interface is available. Refer to
AVEVA Bocad Steel™ Add-On Functionality for further information.

1.4.1 Install Add-On License on License Server

Note: Please contact the local sales department to purchase a new license.

Once the license file has been requested, the regional license administrator returns a
license file for the server, via email. The license file is provided as a .zip file which must
first be extracted prior to installation. Installation of the license file is carried out using the
AVEVA License System Console. Refer to ALS Installation Guide for further information.

1.5 AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 Sample Projects

For AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2, the installation of the sample projects is mandatory required.
The sample projects contain already the UDAs which are predefined using AVEVA
LEXICON.

3.1 Operating Environment

The following products are required for the use of AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2.

3.1.1 AVEVA Licensing 3.0.1

AVEVA Licensing 3.0.1 or later and an appropriate License File is required for the operation
of AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2.
As a consequence of the enhancements it is required that when migrating to AVEVA
Licensing 3.0.1 a new format license file is installed. It is an important consideration that the
new license is requested and received prior to updating the license server. Refer to the
Release letter of AVEVA Licensing 3.0.1 for list of enhancements

Note: AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 does NOT operate with ALS 2.0 or earlier.

3.1.2 AVEVA Client Cache Service 1.0.5

The AVEVA Client Cache Service is designed for use on a LAN or WLAN network with full
connectivity to the Database files and can make a considerable improvement to Dabacon
database performance. The use of the Service is strongly recommended for all multi-user
projects. The AVEVA Client Cache Service has been developed to produce an improved
performance when reading data over 'high' latency networks by minimizing traffic.
The AVEVA Client Cache Service stores a copy of the read project data on the local disk
which improves performance where there is repeated reading of project data across a
computer network. The service operates by a data request being sent to the local Cache
folder to retrieve the required Data (Database Page). If the data is not within the Cache
folder, a Data Request is sent across the network to the central server to retrieve the
required data. Likewise, data that is unchanged since it was previously read is retrieved
from the local Cache whereas Data that has changed in the Database must be read again
from the central Database file. Similarly, data that must be written to a Database file must
still be written to that identified file.
The AVEVA Client Cache Service is installed with AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 and can be
configured or disabled using the AVEVA Cache Service Configuration application. The
prompted form, seen above, enables an Administrator to configure the caching threshold
level to avoid the local hard drive being filled.

Note: The default is to stop caching on the Hard Drive on becoming 80% full. When full,
data is continued to be delivered where already cached but no further data is cached
until more space is made available. The cache persists data locally between
sessions - thereby, very often, the start-up will be quicker.

Note: To ensure the performance benefits of the service are realised, Microsoft Message
Queuing (MSMQ) must be enabled. This is achieved using the Windows
Components feature of Windows Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

For full details, please refer to the AVEVA Client Cache Service 1.0.5 User Documentation.

Configuration

3.6 Environment Variables

AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 relies on the use of environment variables for various aspects of
configuration, notably the location of folders for project databases, client configuration data
and user work space.
When setting up a user's environment, please bear in mind that write access is required for
folders such as AVEVA_DESIGN_USER and AVEVA_DESIGN_WORK. The installer uses
default locations, for both the program files and these data folders.
The defaults are:

Work files %TEMP%\AVEVA\Bocad3.2\wrkdir

User files %TEMP%\AVEVA\Bocad3.2\userdir

Client Data C:\AVEVA\bocad\Client_3_2

Projects Dir C:\AVEVA\bocad\Projects_3_2

Environment variables are set up for AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2 by using a batch (.bat) file
and [Link].
The project folder name must always start with a device name, for example, C:\.

4.1 User Defined Attributes UDAs

In the 3.2 release, user attributes are pre-defined using the AVEVA Lexicon application. A
list of UDAs is provided within the sample project folder. A new job includes the pre-defined
UDAs automatically.
In the 3.1 release, UDAs was defined directly in AVEVA Bocad Steel™ (Member /
Properties / Free Attributes). With 3.2 the Free Attributes function has changed. Refer to
Set User Defined Attributes for further information. The Define functionality is removed,
because the UDA definition is now applied using the AVEVA LEXICON. Refer to Create
User Defined Attributes in LEXICON for further information.

Note: If any macro or any other feature in Bocad, tries to set value in UDA which is not pre-
defined in Lexicon, then the corresponding missing UDA needs to be created in
Lexicon and imported in Bocad. Refer to Upgrade 3.1 Job and Import User Defined
Attributes from LEXICON for further information.

Once an 3.1 project which contains defined UDAs is opened and upgraded (refer to
Upgrade 3.1 Job for further information), three files are created in the current job folder to
enable the upgrade process of the UDAs:

<jobname>miss_uda_PML.log Contains the PML information about UDAs which

need to be defined in Lexicon.

<jobname>miss_uda.xml Contains the context, feature, value of missing

UDAs.

<jobname>miss_uda.log Contains information about missing UDAs as a

reference.

Administration Tool

5 Administration Tool

AVEVA Administration™ is supplied as a separate product and consists of the following

modules:
• ADMINISTRATION
• LEXICON

5.1 ADMINISTRATION
Large projects designed using AVEVA Bocad Steel™ are usually broken down into
individual areas (either physical areas or design areas), depending on the physical size,
complexity and configuration of the project.
On a large project, the system administrator first agrees with project and design
management, the breakdown of the AVEVA Bocad Steel™ project into sections which:
• Are relevant to the needs of project reporting and control
• Form reasonable design subdivisions with sensible match-lines and design content
• Enable enough designers to work in parallel with simultaneous access to carry out their
design tasks.
In much the same way as in a design office (with its section leader, drafts people and so on),
AVEVA Bocad Steel™ has Teams, the members of which are called Users. These Teams
can consist of any number of Users and can be organised by discipline or physical work
areas.
The main features are:
• Access Control (Teams and Users)
• Databases
• Multiple Databases (MDBs)
• Database management functionality.
AVEVA Administration™ includes a database integrity checking utility, used to check for
inconsistencies in the contents of the databases and to derive statistical information about
the use of the database storage capacity.

Note: AVEVA Administration™ also allows the system administrator to reconfigure a

project, which may be necessary to:

• Compact databases at intervals, freeing disk space

• Compare the contents of two similar databases; for example, to create a modification
record.
Refer to AVEVA Administration documentation for further information.

5.2 LEXICON
The LEXICON module enables the system administrator to configure the project elements
and attributes to meet their needs, to define element status rules and define database views
for import/export, reporting and table based working.
LEXICON allows the system administrator to carry out the following:

3.2 © Copyright 2012 to current year. AVEVA Solutions Limited and its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. 5:45
AVEVA Bocad Steel™ 3.2
Administration Tool

• Create and modify User Defined Attributes and User Defined Element Types
• Group similar elements for administrative ease
• Delete elements
• View all available elements in a Explorer window
• Create and modify Database Views
• Create and modify the schema for distributed attributes.
Elements and attributes within a project can be changed by:
• Defining new attributes (User Defined Attributes: UDAs)
• Adding project constraints to system attributes (User System Defined Attributes:
USDAs)
• Sub-typing element types to classify elements (User Defined Element Types: UDETs)
• Extending element definitions to enable claims of different attributes at multiple
locations or by different disciplines using distributed attributes.
Refer to the LEXICON User Guide as part of the AVEVA Administration documentation for
further information.

5.2.1 Create User Defined Attributes in LEXICON

User-Defined Attribute
User Defined Attributes (UDAs) enable the administrator to add new attributes to any
element in the databases of a project. These UDAs are created as elements in the
LEXICON database inside the project. Because LEXICON databases are project specific, it
is possible to define attributes to suit individual project requirements.
Refer to the LEXICON User Guide or LEXICON Command Reference Manual as part of the
Administration documentation for further information.

Customises the CAF based applications using the interactive user interface
customisation tool (UIC).
The content of the user interface is stored in .uic files in:
VERSION\bocrun
The .uic file name refers to the selected Active Customisation File and the
selected area to be customised. For example, if Wheel Default for Active
Customisation File and Context Menu / Member [Wheel Default] is
selected, the .uic file is named:
[Link]

Important: Before customising ribbons or the PowerWheel™, create a copy of

the original .uic files in the bocrun directory to return to the
default settings easily.

Important: Modifications of the user interface cannot be saved with the client
data. A version update overwrites the existing .uic files and
previous modifications.
The user interface must be customised each time a new version of
the software is loaded.

6.10 Bevel Plate Edges using Weld Preparation

For the 3.2 release, the weld preparation has been reworked to enable an entire solution
from design of bevel plate edges (abbreviated: bevels) up to the output. If bevels are added
to a plate using the weld preparation, a bevel is stored in the data base as a BEVEL
database element. The storing enables the display of:

7.1 Project

7.1.1 Export to AutoCAD and ANSYS Using STEP Interface

Displays the MechaniCAD interface which supports the exchange of 3D building data in
.step/.stp (AP203/214) or .iges/.igs formats.

Note: Before using the interface, un-claim all elements. Claimed elements cannot be
exported!

Data can be exchanged in both directions between programs such as Inventor or AutoCAD
(Autodesk GmbH), Microstation (Bentley Systems Deutschland GmbH) or 3D Design
(ANSYS Inc.).
Only 3D geometric data is transferred. Attributes such as profile names, materials and
designations are not taken into account.
With version 3.2, the MechaniCAD Interface has been extended. As a result, counter-
rotating edges are delivered. Hence, a real 3D-Solid model volume can be exported to
AutoDesk and ANSYS as well as centre of gravity and buoyancy. In ANSYS, a facetted
BREP model can be displayed, identified and used for structural analytic examinations.
Select Project / Import/Export > MechaniCAD > Export > set STP option > More button
to display the Export boc3db -> MechaniCAD window:

Configuration
Specifies the type in which 3D model is to be transferred from AVEVA Bocad Steel™ into the

AVEVA Bocad Steel™ User Interface

It is required to know what type the destination program imports the export results in.
Several variants are provided for the export:

Asls (bocad) Transfers members with the highest possible shape

representation.

FacettedBreps Transfers members as solids, which are described using

plane surfaces. The members are represented using
facetted brep shapes.

ShellBasedSurface Model Transfers members as a Shell based surface model

entity.

ManifoldSurfaceBrep Transfers members as solids, which are described using

plane surfaces. The members are represented using
manifold surface shapes.

Model as 3D solid Transfers members as solids including additional

information, for example, volume, centre of gravity and
buoyancy information, to help the importing software to
identify 3D solids.

Note: To get access to the additional information, after

importing the .stp in AutoCAD, the BLOCK must
be EXPLODEd (URSPRUNG). The remaining
element must be identified to enable a 3DSOLID
which delivers the required information, for
example, volume, weight, centre of gravity.

Number of decimals
Specifies the number of decimals exported to .stp. Enter a value between 0 and [Link]
higher the number of decimals, the higher the accuracy of the values in the exported files.

Test Level
Switches internal test level (integer value). Default value is 0 which suppresses the detailed
export information. Enter 1 to output detailed export information.

Export Bolt-Holes
Defines the export of bolt holes.
If the check box is selected, bolts-holes are exported.
If the check box is not selected, bolts-holes are not exported.

available. All holes higher than the specified diameter are exported to .stp.
If the check box is not selected, all holes are exported to .stp.

Export Bolts
Defines the export of bolts that are created on the members. The bolts are saved on
IFCMechanicalFastener objects, which are STP standard objects for representing bolts.
If the check box is selected, the bolts are exported to .stp.

Important: Limitation for Bolts

Bolts connections are not displayed in the exported model. Only the geometry
and the location of the bolts are exported. No information is transferred that
describes which element is connected to which bolt.

If the check box is not selected, the bolts are not exported to .stp.

Export Assembly Structure

Exports single parts in groups of assemblies. Only single part assembly structure
information is transferred. Connection information is not exported.
If the check box is selected, the assembly structure is exported.
If the check box is not selected, the assembly structure is not considered during export.

Triangulation
(Only required, if the exported file does not represent specific elements in the viewer
application).
Defines the interpretation of surfaces in the .stp file to ensure representation of according
elements in different viewer applications.
If the check box is selected, the surfaces in the export file are triangulated. Triangulated
surfaces can be displayed in most applications.

7.4.2 Mark Welds with Prefix 3.2 Fix2

Offshore fabricators have specific requirements regarding the prefix of weld markings. A
complete weld mark prefix text can exist of:
• Fixed prefix of simple letter, for example, W.
• Prefix set by rule.
• Attributes, for examples, phase, assembly mark.
• Weld part owner attributes and weld attributes.

The new functionality covers the different ways of perform prefixes. The weld marking:
• Recognises different prefixes.
• Offers the possibility to restart marking for each new prefix.
• Enables the access to the number of digits provided for the mark number itself.

Important: Limitation
Weld marking with prefixes is only possible if mark numbers for members and
welds are unique and members and welds are unmarked.

Select Output / Marking / Advanced > More button> Welds to display the Marking
window:

Starting mark
Defines the starting weld mark number.
Enter a number higher than 0. To distinguish the weld mark number from the member and
bolt mark number, use different range of numbers for each element or a prefix.

Enter a value higher than 0. If the number of mark number digits is lower than the defined
digit number, the remaining digits are “filled up” with 0.

Prefix
Defines a use of a weld mark prefix.
If the check box is selected, the weld mark is created with a prefix according to the Weld <
Prefix settings window.
If the check box is not selected, the weld mark is created without a prefix.

Condition Defines a value an attribute can have.

Prefix Defines the text to be used if the attribute value matches a condition.
If the value does not match any condition, the Set the Portal Default
text is used. If the default text is empty, the attribute value itself is
used.

For example:
As Owner Part Attribute the Phase is selected (DA-11). If owner parts has been created in
several phases, the different phase number can be used as condition for different prefix
results. For each phase another Prefix value must be entered.

Condition Prefix Explanation

1 Phase1 If the Owner Part is created in phase 1, the Prefix is performed

as Phase1.

2 Phase2 If the Owner Part is created in phase 2, the Prefix is performed

as Phase2.

3 Phase3 If the Owner Part is created in phase 3, the Prefix is performed

as Phase3.

Set the Portal Default

Defines a prefix default when rules are set for the prefix. Enter a default prefix consists of
maximum 30 letters and/or numbers.
If the Condition value does not match any condition, the Set the Portal Default text is

string. The search function is case-sensitive.

Element Type One or more element types can be entered in this field, separated
by a space, comma or semi-colon such as:

DTJOB DTPHSE, DTPDEF; DTPROF

Selecting the [ALL] option from the drop-down list finds all
element types within the current scope. The field requires a valid
entry before the search process is initiated. It is not possible to
search for all elements if the World element is selected.

Current Element / You can search within the Current Element, a Chosen Element or
Element / Current Current Collection.
Collection

Reset Reset allows you to reset all the search fields.

• Attribute Filters
You can set one or more attribute filters for the search. The specified attributes apply to
each element type listed. If there is more than one attribute filter specified then the found
elements satisfy all of the attribute filters.

To add an attribute filter, select Add Filter action label and then enter a valid attribute in the
displayed field. Click in the Operator field and accept the suggested Operator or select a
different one from the drop-down list. With the Operator selected, click in the Value field and
enter an appropriate value. Accepting these settings enters them in the filter grid.

In the List Operator

The In the List Operator enables you to specify a list of values (separated by spaces) for
the specified attribute value - these can be numeric or non-numeric, depending on the type
of the attribute. For example, Attribute=AREA, Operator="In the List", Value="0 1 3", would
find items which have AREA attribute equal to either 0 or 1 or 3.

within the Design application). To change this ceiling click CE to set the current element as
the Ceiling for the search.
The databases listed in the In Database combo-box are those that are available to you and
the combo-box automatically updates if the database item exists in any of those databases.
Similarly, if you change the database type in the combo-box then the database item
currently displayed is checked, and if not found in that database, the ceiling of the search
scope is reset to world.

Volumetric Search within an Existing Model Item or an Explicit Volume

7.7.5 Collections
The Collections window is used to group data into collections and display Collections. You
can then implement operations on all the items in a collection in one action.

The Collections window allows you to generate collections of database elements which
you need to work on. Each time you access the Collections window, in any of the modules
that use it (DRAW, MODEL and SPOOL), the data collections generated is displayed
enabling elements to be easily transferred between these modules.
The contents of Collections persists between applications and module switching, as well as
between sessions. The data stored is per user, per project in the AVEVA_DESIGN_USER
directory, for example, in Model you can add elements to Collections and then switch to
DRAW to use the same data.

Note: If the AVEVA_DESIGN_USER directory is shared between users, the users are able
to view the same data.

The Collections window consists of two parts:

The top part of the window is the Collections grid and displays the Collections folders.
The lower part of the window is the Contents grid, which displays the status of each item in
the collection currently selected in the Collections grid. The Contents grid can be
customised. Refer to Collections for further information.
