CANVAS BASICS EDUCATOR BADGE

The Canvas Basics Educator Badge is designed by the Canvas Training Team to provide an
asynchronous training tool to deliver the comprehensive, in-depth foundation to Canvas
functionality and provides the Canvas Basics badge evidence of the instructor’s readiness to use
Canvas. As the instructor progress through the modules, he/she will cover the Canvas features
needed to become First Day Ready and use Canvas as a new Canvas user. The program is self-paced
and not facilitated but structured so that the instructor must complete the modules and content in
the order presented. The instructor may always go back and review material, but he/she cannot
skip ahead in the course content.
The Canvas Basics Educator Badge is made up of the following modules:
Module 0: Course Overview
Module 1: Opening Canvas
Learn how to configure Canvas Notification Preferences so that the instructor can be notified
according to his/her needs. Then, dive into how to utilize the Canvas Dashboard, from
ordering the course cards to personalizing colour choices. Finally, learn how to effectively
use the Global Navigation to access the Canvas Calendar and Inbox.
Module 2: Creating a Canvas Course
This module will walk the instructor through the process of creating a Canvas LMS course so
that he/she can be first day ready. The instructor will learn how to create a Home Page,
utilize Modules, and access student view to ensure his/her course is "first day ready."
Module 3: Getting Started with Assignments and Assessments
This portion covers how to build assignments and assessments in Canvas course. The
instructor will learn how to use all the activity features, including Assignments, Discussions,
and Quizzes, to engage the students in his/her course content. This course also details how
to access Student View, where the instructor can participate in his/her course from the
students' perspective.
Module 4: Grading and Feedback
In this section, the instructor will learn how to use the Canvas Gradebook and Speedgrader.
The instructor will learn how to provide student rich feedback through Speedgrader and
grade Assignments through the use of Rubrics.
Module 5: Wrap Up
This final section provides take-away resources to help the instructor use Canvas with best
practices in mind. A review of the key concepts covered in the summative assessment is
provided along with that assessment. This module will also provide details on the badge the
instructor has earned and where to access that badge.
Each of the four modules will contain formative assessments that help the instructor gauge
retention of the information presented. The instructor may retake these formative assessments as
often as he/she wishes. A summative assessment is provided at the end of the entire course. After
completing the course modules and the formative and summative assessments, the instructor will
earn a digital badge issued by Instructure through Badgr.

Access training resources crafted by the Instructure Training team.
Discover the benefits of using Canvas regardless of the format for delivery (blended, remote,
etc.).
Identify and apply the skills to create learning environments in Canvas.
Explore the resources and collaboration opportunities available to all Canvas clients and
those using the Free for Teacher platform.
Plan for the next steps and resources to continue building on learned contents here further
to create engaging and responsive learning environments in Canvas.
