1. lntrouduction
A . The Main swi tchboard(MSB) c o n s i s t s of measuring instruments, swi t c h ~ n g
d e v i c e s , r e g u l a t i n g devices and p r o i e c t i v e devices, e t c necessary f o r
m o n i t o r i n g , c o n t r o l l i n g and p r o t e c t i n g the e l e c t r i c a l g e n e r a t i n g
equipments, e l e c t r i c a l loads and e l e c t r i c power system.
As the b r a i n of e l e c t r i c a l systems, the MSB i s e s s e n t i a l f o r e l f i c i e n t
c e n t r a l i z e d c o n t r o l of the e l e c t r i c a l systems.
The e l e c t r i c a l generating equipments for supply of e l e c t r i c power for
e l e c t r i c loads on board the s h i p c o n s i s t s of three main g e n e r a t o r s , p u s
one emergency generator which i s a u t o m a t i c a l l y operated when the e l e c t r c
power supply by the three main generators becomes impossible.
The MSB i s equipped w i t h ?he f o l l o w i n g c i r c u i t breakers:
a) The c i r c u i t breakers which p r o t e c t the generator from f a u l t s i n
m o n i t o r i n g and c o n t r o l f u n c t i o n s of the e l e c t r i c a l g e n e r a t i n g
equipment and i n the generators, or other f a u i t s , and
b) The c i r c u i t breakers which not o n l y feed the e l e c t r i c power t o the
loads located eisewhere the s h i u but a l s o p r o t e c t the load s i d e
equipment c o r r e c t l y responding t o the n a t u r e l k i n d of f a u l t when a
f a u l t occurs.
B. The Emergency Switchboard(ESB) i s provided for automaticlmanual c o n t r o l
and t e s t i n g of an emergency engine-generator set for m o n i t o r i n g the
emergency generator i n operation and for c o n t r o l of feeding t o e s s e n t i a l
services.
Under normal c o n d i t i o n , the e s s e n t i a l load c i r c u i t s are s u p p l i e d from the
MSB v i a the ESB.
I f the MSB develop a low vol tage or dead bus t r o u b l e under the above
c o n d i t i o n , then the b u s - t i e c i r c u i t breaker on ESB w i l l be t r i p p e d and
the Emergency Generator wi l l be automat i c a l l y s t a r t e d .
When the emergency generator reaches synchronous speed and b u i l d s up
s u f f i c i e n t v o l t a g e , i t s c i r c u i t breaker w i l l be a u t o m a t i c a l l y c l o s e d t o
r e s t o r e the e s s e n t i a l s e r v i c e s .
2 . Generators
There a r e 4 d i e s e l generators for MSB r a t e AC 450V 3PH 60HZ
( 2 4 8 7 . 5 ~ 3 , 2 1 2 5 )KVA
~ 1 and one emergency generator f o r ESB r a t e d AC 450V
3PH 60HZ 250KVA.

The switchboards are manufactured to the requirements of the
Germani scher L l o y d .
4. C o n s t r u c t i o n
4 . 1 Type of switchboard

4 . 2 . 1 Framework
The switchboard c o n s i s t s of a number of c e l I s .
Each c e l l i s composed of a r i g i d l y assembled, v i b r a t ion-r i s i s t a n t
angle-steel framework.
4 . 2 . 2 Front Doors
A door paneling of f o l d e d sheet-steei i s mounted w i r h one s ~ d ehinged
and the other s i d e fastened by snap-lock type latches on the
framework.
When ~ n s p e c t i o n , r e p a i r or replacement of the i n t e r n a l d e v i c e s , each
knob i s turned 90" counter-clockwise to unlock the door.
The panel door can be h e l d by means of a stopper provided on the panel
bottom.
4 . 2 . 3 Rear doors
A l ~ k ethe f r o n t door, the hinged door type 1s employed.
However, the door can be removed from the hinged s e c t i o n .
The two doors can be opened.
This makes i s p o s s i b l e to execute i n s p e c t i o n and maintenance of
i n t e r n a l devices from the rear s i d e .
4 . 2 . 4 V e n t i l a t i o n hole
I n order t o d ~ s c h a r g e the heat t o be generated i n the switchboard
t o m a i n t a i n the i n switchboard temperature w i t h i n the s p e c i f i e d value,
a d r i p proof v e n t i l a t i o n h o l e i s p r o v ~ d e don the rear door make
e f f e c t i v e natural v e n t i l a t i o n .
4 . 2 . 5 Flame retardant p a r t i t i o n p l a t e s between framework c e l l s
A sheet-steel p a r t i t ion i s provided between bus t i e panel and adjacent
panel .
T h i s prevents propagation of f o r e t o other c e I s , i f i t i s generated
by s h o r t - c i r c u i t i n g or other causes w i t h i n framework c e l l .
