Starting System - Overview
Starting System
‘The starting system controls the cranking of the engine. The starter motor is enabled by the starter relay when the
relay is activated by the PCM. The BCM receives inputs from the ignition switch, transmission and the BOM before
activating the starter relay {o initiate cranking of the engine.

Starting System
This vehicle is equipped with a BATS that disables the engine from starting if an unprogrammed PATS key is used or
an invalid PCM ID is received. The PATS is controlled by the CM. If there is a PATS concer that disables the
tengine, the IPC displays the corresponding message in the message center.

‘Alarm, Deseription and Operation),
Under normal operation, when the ignition is tumed to START, the PCM receives the following inputs:
+ Request to crank engine message from the BCM
+ PATS enable message from the BCM
+ Voltage from the run/start relay
* Correct transmission atk or neutral input from the automatic transmission
When the PCM receives the correct inputs, voltage and ground is supplied to the starter relay coil. When the starter
relay coil is energized, It provides voltage to the starter solenoid, allowing the starter motor to crank the engine.
‘The PCM disengages the starter once an engine Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) threshold is reached, a set crank time

‘Starting System - Overview
Starting System
The stating system conto the cranking ofthe engine, The starter motor is enabled by the starter relay when the
relay i activated by the ECM. The PCM receives inputs from the ignition switch, ICM automatic transmission, CPP
‘manual transmission and the BOM before activating the starter relay to initiate cranking of the engine.
Starting System-with Auto-Start-Stop
‘The Auto-Start-Stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the vehicle's engine while
the vehicle is at a complete stop and resterting the engine when the clutch pedal is pressed. The Auto-Start-Stop
system Is automatically enabled whenever the ignition is tumed on, The vehicle may restart automatically in order to

Starting System‘The starting system controls the cranking of the engine. Under normal operation, when the ignition is tumed t0
START, the PEM receives the following inputs:
Request to crank engine message from the BCM
\Voltage signal on the crank detect circuit from the ignition switch,
PATS enable message from the BCM
Correct transmission park or neutral input from the automatic transmission
Correct bottom of travel input from the CPP switch (manual transmission),
When the PCM receives the correct inputs, voltage and ground is supplied to the starter relay coil. When the starter
relay coil is energized, it provides voltage to the starter solenoid, allowing the starter motor fo crank the engine,
‘The POM disengages the starter once an engine Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) threshold is reached, a set crank time
is exceeded or the ignition is tured OFF.
Auto-Start-Stop System
‘The Auto-start-stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the vehicle's engine while the
vehicle is idling at a complete stop, and restarting the engine when the clutch pedal is pressed. The system can be
disabled through the auto-start-stop contral switch. The Auto-start-stop system is automatically enabled whenever the
ignition is tumed on.

+ the clutch pedal and accelerator pedals are released.
The engine automatically restarts when:
the clutch pedal is pressed.

the blower fan speed is increased or the climate contral temperature is changed.

Starting System - Overview
Starting System
‘The starting system controls the cranking of the engine. The starter motor is enabled by the starter relay when the
relay is activated by the PCM, The ECM receives inputs from the ignition switch, TCM automatic transmission, CPP.
‘manual transmission and the BCM before activating the starter relay to initiate cranking of the engine,
Starting System-with Auto-StartStop
‘The Auto-Start-Stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the vehicle's engine whila
the vehicle is at a complete stop and restarting the engine when the clutch padal is prassed. The Auto-Start-Stop
system Is automatically enabled whenever the ignition is tumed on. The vehicle may restart automatically in order to

Starting System
‘The starting system controls the cranking of the engine, Under normal operation, when the ignition is tumed toSTART, the PCM receives the following inputs:
+ Request to ctank engine message from the BCM
* Voltage signal on the crank detect circuit from the Ignition switeh.
+ PATS enable message from the BCM
+ Correct transmission park or neutral input from the automatic transmission
* Correct bottom of travel input from the GPP witch (manus transmission).
When the PCM receives the correct inputs, voltage and ground is supplied to the starter relay coil. When the starter
relay coil is energized, It provides voltage to the starter solenoid, allowing the starter motor to crank the engine,
‘The PCM disengages the starter once an engine Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) threshold is reached, a set crank time
is exceeded or the ignition is tumed OFF.
Auto-Start-Stop System
‘The Auto-start-stop system helps reduce fuel consumption by automatically shutting off the vehicle's engine while the
vehicle is idling at a complete stop, and restarting the engine when the clutch pedal is pressed. The system can be
disabled through the auto-start-stop contral switch. The Auto-start-stop system is automatically enabled whenever the
ignition is tumed on,
‘The engine automatically stops when:
* the vehicle is stopped, and
* the transmission is in neutral, and
* the clutch pedal and accelerator pedals are released.
‘The engine automatically restarts when:
the clutch pedal is pressed.
the Auto-star-stop system is disabled through the auto-start-stop control switch,
the battery has a low state of charge.
itis necessary to maintain interior comfort.
the blower fan speed is increased or the climate contral temperature is changed.
fan electrical accessory is turned on or plugged in.
there is low brake vacuum.

used or an invalid POM ID is received. The PATS is controled by the BCM. If there is a PATS concem that disaties

2. Check the wear pattems on the starter drive gear and the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. Ifthe wear pattem is

3. If the starter motor drive gear and the flywheel or flaxplate ring gear are nat fully engaging and the starter motor
ive gear is scored or damaged, then install a new starter motor.
