EVOLUTION GUIDE

TO MEASURING
SCREWS & FASTENERS

Overall length of a screw:

On a countersunk headed screw it is taken as the length

from the topside of the head to the tip of the screw
point.

On a hexagonal headed, pancake headed or otherwise

flanged headed screw it is taken as the length from the
underside of the flanged component to the tip of the
screw point.

Threaded length of a screw:

Is taken in all cases as the length from the tip of the

screw point until the peak of the last thread towards the
screw head.

Drilling point length of a screw:

On a sharp pointed screw is taken as the length from

the tip of the screw point until the point where the
angled/tapered section meets the full width of the
screws minor diameter.

On a self-drilling pointed screw is taken as the length

from the tip of the screw point until the peak of the 2nd
thread (coarse threading) or 3rd thread (fine threading)
of the threaded portion immediately behind the drilling
blade(s).

Useable length of a screw:

On a countersunk headed screw it is taken as the length

from the rearmost point on the drilling point length to the
topside of the fastener head.

On a hexagonal headed, pancake headed or otherwise

flanged headed screw it is taken as the length from the
rearmost point on the drilling point length to the
underside of the fastener head.

Fastener Major Diameter:

Is taken in all cases as the largest threaded dimension

– thread peak to thread peak of the same thread.

Fastener Minor Diameter:

Is taken in all cases as the smallest threaded dimension

– thread trough to thread trough of the same thread.

Fastener Nominal Diameter:

The stated closest gauge size to finished major

diameter size. In most cases tolerances will stop
fasteners from actually being their nominal dimensions,
hence they are termed as “nominal” only. * The major diameter rounded up or
down to the nominal, for example:
Dnom = 4.8mm
