Role of Safety Officers in Prevention

The role of the safety officer is to conduct inspections to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors, provide safety training to workers, investigate accidents, ensure safety standards are met, perform risk analyses to reduce hazards, implement recommendations from incident analyses, and monitor the effectiveness of safety programs and implemented recommendations. Q) Discus the role of safety officer in accident prevention?

Accident prevention may be defined as an integrated program, a series of coordinated activities,


directed to the control of unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and based on knowledge, attitude and
ability for safety. It aims to serve industry, country and humanity

 To take plant inspection round to find out the unsafe condition and unsafe act
 To arrange for education & training on safety for the personal. This includes proper
motivation to the workers coupled with in calculating the spirit of safety among them
 To carry out safety Inspection & Surveys & accident inspection s pertaining to safety.
 Assist & advise for Accident Investigation also investigate peculiar Accidents
 To maintain adequate safety standard conforming to safety laws as envisaged by
central, state & local authorities
 To carry out risk analysis of process to reduce the hazard from process
 To implement the recommendation from analysis of incident to prevent further
reoccurrence
 Monitoring the effectiveness of implemented recommendation

Five basic or fundamental steps for accident prevention suggested by H.W. Heinrich, are

 Organization. (Policy & Safety Structure)


 Fact finding.(Investigation)
 Analysis of the facts found (for immediate cause & Root cause)
 Selection of remedy and (Corrective & Preventive action)
 Application of the remedy (Actual Implementation for closure)
 Sixth step of 'Monitoring' (i.e. measurement o: result, assessment i.e. comparison with legal
criteria or standard, feedback and further improvement) is also suggested. Such review is
necessary after all safety programs
Q) Safety suggestion scheme?/ Why safety suggestion scheme is important in
safety? Explain its importance
 A suggestion scheme is a methodical tool of the management of an organization for
improvement. By implementing suggestion schemes, organizations improve their profits,
reduce costs, enhance employee’s morale, improve safety performance improve retention
of employees, facilitate innovation and improve responsiveness to the public by
improvements in service
 To encourage employee to bringing out their creative potential and ideas that could lead
towards efficiency improvement, Safety improvement, reduction in wastage,
improvement in productivity and profitability
 The suggestion scheme process involves writing of suggestions on a predefined format by
the employees of the organization and dropping the same in a suggestion box which is
easily accessible.
 An equal opportunity to all employees for constructive thinking
 Recognition for individual ingenuity and creativeness
 To encourage and tap creative potential of the employees towards performance and
growth
 To enhance employees’ belongingness through their participation
 An opportunity to participate in the development and growth of the Company

Acceptance criteria of a suggestion / suggestion invited (Importance)

 Improves the efficiency of processes


 Improves the quality of products or/and services
 Improves usages of resources, materials and space etc.
 Reduces damages
 Improves the working environmental conditions including removal of hazards to health
and possibilities of accidents
 Lightening physical efforts / ergonomic interventions in certain operations and thereby
leading to reduced, fatigue and increase productivity
 Improvement of working condition including health and welfare
 Improve safety standards of workplace, environment and pollution control
 To eliminate unsafe condition at plant
Implementation of suggestion scheme

 Top management should demonstrate its support and sincerity in setting up and
implementation of the suggestion scheme
 Managers and supervisors should be given complete freedom for implementation of the
suggestion scheme
 There is a well developed administrative system to facilitate the processing, evaluation,
monitoring and rewarding of the employees. There should be a clear criterion for steering
the suggestion scheme towards achieving the targets.
 There is a detailed and consistent evaluation criterion. The scope of the suggestion should
be clearly defined.
 There should be a good combination of tangible and intangible awards which should be
organized to motivate the employees to participate.

Q) Explain with appropriate examples that safety award at different levels promotes safety?

The greater the employees participation in safety programme, the more effective it will be the
organization safety performance.

Safe work environment: It seems obvious but employee working areas must be safe from all potential
hazards

Safety campaign- it will promote the safety in the organization and also award the best employees who
drives safety during the campaign

Best safety corner award- dept level best department is selected for implementing best practices in
their area

Best Safety slogan Award week to promote safety culture in award

On spot safety Award- All supervisors, plant managers, and managers in general should seek out
opportunities to catch employees working safely, using the right safety equipment and clothing, and
using safe work practices.

Best of Best award for year to employees who is performing best with all aspect of safety norms

for their contributions to the advancement of safety in the workplace, on the road, and in homes and
communities.

participate in quiz competition and also improves their skill related to safety
