PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Aug 2010 - Jun 2011 Crew Architects, Edinburgh - Architectural Assistant

Crew Architects is a young Architectural Practice, based on a wide beam barge boat, founded in 2007 by Architect Gillian Hanley, I was her only employee. We worked together on number of projects which were mainly domestic, both extensions and new builds, but we also had a couple of non-domestic jobs. Working for Crew Architects was my first time being in a small office, and I feel that it will prove to be an invaluable experience at this stage of my architectural career. I learnt important lessons from Gillian about time management, efficiency and professionalism. My confidence in communicating with Clients, Engineers and Contractors has greatly improved. I especially enjoyed being a participate in progressing projects from the initial stages, right through to completion. I grew into my role at the practice and I was able to back-up and assist Gillian when required. My key roles included:
Collaborating in the initial design stages (surveying and designing). Researching product manufacturers and suppliers. Producing and submitting planning and building warrant submissions. Attending meetings with clients, consultants and contractors. Liaising with Planning and Building Warrant Officers. Appointing Structural Engineers, checking and approving their input. Producing tender information. (detail drawings, schedules and specifications). Attending on-site progress meetings, helping carry out snagging.

Apr 2010 - Jul 2010

Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen - Architectural Technician

In my time with Housing and Environment department, I worked on a wide range of different and interesting projects. I was brought in to help out with the Disabled Adaptations, an area of the department which deals with the requests of the tenants in Council owned flats, primarily requests for level access showers or wheelchairs ramps. I also worked on the structural repair and refurbishment of a block of four shops, which sit on the ground floor of a granite tenement in Torry. They form the first stage on a new council initiative called Retail Rocks, which is an effort reoccupy some of the shops which have been forced to close during the recent recession. Key roles included:
Working as part of the Disabled Adaptations team. Liaising with Occupational Therapists and Tenants. Writing meeting minutes. Managing time and organising weekly schedules. Surveying and producing layout drawings. Meeting with Building Control Officers. Working with Project Architects and Structural Engineers. Attending meetings with council representatives. Producing planning and building warrant submissions.

Jul 2006 - Aug 2007 Keppie Design, Edinburgh - Part 1 Assistant

My year with Keppie Design in Edinburgh was very educational and worthwhile. Observing and learning from awardwinning Architects on a day-to-day basis was a truly valuable experience. I spent the majority of my time in the team working on a large-scale extension to the Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Dunfermline. When I arrived the project was just entering the tendering process and I began by helping to put the work packages together. I feel I became a valuable member of the practice and integrated well, becoming a popular person both in and out of the office. During this year I was given a taste of how an Architects office is run and working on the Kingsgate project has taught me how to work effectively in a large design team. Key Roles included: Working as part of the Kingsgate Team. Compiling work packages, updating and producing detail drawings. Working towards weekly deadlines. Organising regular meetings with Sub-Contractors. Making regular site visits, taking part in meetings and checking on the progress of the work. Helping with planning applications and feasibility studies. Working on competition entries. Certifying drawings from sub-contractors. HOBBIES & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES

I regularly play football, captaining a weekly 5-a-side team and I also enjoy visiting the gym and playing squash. I like to use my spare time productively, learning new 3D visualisation techniques and web-design, I currently updating my personal website www.colinrobertson.co.uk which promotes my work and makes my portfolio more accessible to prospective employers like yourselves. I hope that you will take the time to browse my site as I believe it will allow you to gain an insight into my design style, CAD ability and my work ethic. In my Masters year was a part of the 5710 (fifty-seven ten) Society. This is a non-profit organisation run every year by the Masters year Architecture Students, and each week we invite a guest Architect to come and speak to the students. Working within the committee was very enjoyable and helped to me develop my skills of team work. I was also a student rep throughout Honours Year. This voluntary job, along with many other duties, involved participating in staff/student liaison meetings where I represented the concerns of my fellow students.
