Lesson 5 Whose hat is this?


PART I

Look at the picture. Identify the place. Listen to the dialog. Then read the dialog as
you listen to the recording. (Observa el dibujo e identifica el lugar. Escucha el diálogo
cuidadosamente. Luego lee el diálogo a medida que escuchas la grabación).

(In one of the classrooms of Meyer Institute, Mrs.Johnson, a teacher at Meyer Institute,
gives instructions to a group of students who are preparing a dramatization for their
graduation).

A: Come here, please. Listen to me. Mary’s dress is red. It’s in that box.
Tony´s trousers are blue and grey. They’re long. The boys’ shoes are white
and black and their gloves are black. Elisa, your blouse is in the box too.
B: What color is it?
A: It´s pink.
C: Teacher, is my shirt pink too?

A: No, it isn´t. It´s green.


D: What about our skirts, teacher?
A: Your skirts and hats are in this bag.
D: Are the skirts pink?
A: No, they´re red. The hats are brown.
C: Are these the girls´ gloves?
A: No, they aren´t. Their gloves are on the table. Those are Tim’s gloves.
E: (Somebody knocks at the door and enters) Good morning.
A: Good morning, Mr. Peterson! Come in. Listen, guys. I’d like you to
meet Mr. Peterson, the pianist of the play.
ALL: How do you do, Mr. Peterson.
E: How do you do, kids.
A: All right, all right. I think everybody is ready so let´s start the rehearsal!
ALL: O.K. Let´s go!

POSSESSIVE ‘S
Posesivo Anglosajón

 El posesivo anglosajón se utiliza para indicar lo


que alguien o algo posee. Este se forma
colocando un apóstrofe y una letra “s” después
de la persona o personas que poseen algo.
Ejemplos:

Kelly has two umbrellas.


Her umbrellas are red.
Kelly’s umbrellas are red.

My dog has a blue ball.


Its ball is blue.
My dog’s ball is blue.

Observe que primero se coloca el nombre del que posee y


luego lo que se posee.

* Existen algunas variaciones a la regla anterior.


Cuando el nombre del que posee termina en “s”, éste
debe ir seguido del apóstrofe y la “s”. Pero cuando el
poseedor está en plural, por ejemplo “The students”,
la “s” que va después del apóstrofe se elimina.
Ejemplos: 48
James’s hat is brown.
The students’ clothes are nice.

girls) _____________ clothes are red, pink and yellow. (Tim) ______________ gloves

are in the box and (the girls) ____________ gloves are on the table. (Elisa) __________

blouse is pink and (the boys) __________ shoes are black and white. Everything is

Preguntas de SÍ o NO acerca de Colores

* Para formular preguntas de Sí o No referidas al


color de algo, el verbo “Ser” (to be) debe estar al
inicio de la pregunta seguido por el sujeto en
singular o plural (dependiendo del verbo) y éste
por el color. Ej.:
Is Bertha’s dress pink? Yes, it is./ No, it isn’t.
Are Tony’s shoes black? Yes, they are./ No, they aren’t.
Is your jacket brown? Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.

Preguntas de Información

* Para formular preguntas de información referidas


al color de algo, la frase “What color...” debe estar
al inicio de las mismas seguida por el verbo “Ser”
(to be) y luego por el sujeto. Ej.:

Preguntando Acerca de Posesión

* Cuando deseamos saber a quién le pertenece algo, se


utiliza el pronombre interrogativo “Whose”, el cual quiere
decir “De quién”. Para formular preguntas de información
referentes a posesión, el pronombre “Whose” debe estar al
inicio de las mismas seguido por el nombre del objeto(s)
acerca del cual queremos saber a quién pertenece, y por
último el verbo “Ser” (to be) y el sujeto de la pregunta
(“this” o “these”). Ej.:

Whose dress is this? It’s Mary’s dress. It’s her dress.


Whose umbrellas are these? They’re Kelly’s shoes. They’re her
shoes.

* La palabra “Whose” se pronuncia de la misma forma que la


frase “Who’s”, pero NO significan lo mismo.
Who’s ≠ Whose
Who’s that? (acerca de una persona)
Whose hat is that? (acerca de un objeto)
